Just as the fall television season is really getting underway, we’ve almost reached the end of the second season of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. With only a few episodes left, let’s see how things played out in this week’s entry, “Bring Me the Head of Santanico Pandemonium.”
The episode opens up at the newest headquarters of the Culebra, Jacknife Jed’s, in the aftermath of the destruction of the Titty Twister. Seth, full of bravado, walks in with a demand to see Malvado, and we get to witness the first meeting in the series between the two characters. It’s a really fun conversation to see as the tension between the two is thicker than almost any other characters we’ve seen before. Malvado has been built into a pretty incredible and complex character this season, and he’s proven to be a great entry to both the show and series mythology. This meeting also serves as a framing narrative for the events of the episode as the majority takes place in, essentially, a flashback as Seth tries to make a deal with Malvado.
Richie and Santanico are also at each other’s throat after what happened during the quasi-double date. The relationship between these two has been really exciting to watch, essentially being a roller coaster in these first seven episodes. Whereas they once felt essential to each others’ lives, they now both seem to only be working together for mutual benefit. They’ve become a far cry from the bond that formed at the end of last season, so it’ll be interesting to see how they develop in the final three episodes.
Over on the mythology front, Freddie and Kate come into conflict with Carlos and Scott in “Bring Me the Head of Santanico Pandemonium,” and it’s become clear that the two sides are going to be a big focus through the finale. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the rapport that’s been created between the leads on both sides lately, which surprises me since I had completely bought into a relationship between Seth and Kate (that was dropped very early on). It’s a testament to the quality of the writing that I’ve become willing to follow these characters just about anywhere.
The most fun part of the episode is a Seth/Richie/Eddie team-up that lets us see the brothers back in full swing, while including Eddie, an infrequently mentioned character that has managed to steal quite a few scenes this season, in a way that helps rebuild the bond between the two. As I’ve mentioned throughout my reviews this season, the side characters have been used in absolutely spectacular ways this year, and it’s really brought the show up a notch.
“Bring Me the Head of Santanico Pandemonium” slowed things down to progress the story, but it still provided enough character development and solid action to keep things interesting. We’re close to the end of the season now, so it should prove fun to see the payoff of all the setup that’s taken place.
