While we all love Taraji P. Henson’s Cookie on Empire, it sounds like the character may be getting an extra bit of attention when the series returns this fall for Season 2, and that attention will be coming from Adam Rodriguez.
The actor, who has previously appeared on The Night Shift, CSI: Miami, and CBS’ short-lived soap Reckless (he’s also one of the stars of this summer’s Magic Mike XXL), has signed on for a recurring role in Empire‘s second season. And from the description of Rodriguez’s character, it seems like he’ll certainly be involved with Cookie; whether that involvement is romantic or not remains to be seen.
Rodriguez will play Laz Delgado, a native New Yorker and former EMT turned smooth-talking concert promoter, who is described as having “expert hustler skills.” The big news about Laz, though: he takes a “special interest” in Cookie.
With his recurring role as Laz, Rodriguez joins an already impressive lineup of stars set to appear in Empire Season 2. Comedian Chris Rock, R&B superstar Alicia Keys, and rock star Lenny Kravitz were all previously announced as guest stars for the FOX series’ second season. In addition, as was announced back in April, Gabourey Sidibe and Ta’Rhonda Jones, who recurred as Becky and Porsha in Empire Season 1, have been promoted to full-fledged series regulars.
Empire is one of the few returning network shows that already has its premiere date set. The mega-hit musical drama’s second season begins on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 9 p.m. on FOX.
