Orphan Black Season 3 Episode 5 Review: “Scarred by Many Past Frustrations”

Orphan Black

What a stressful episode of Orphan Black! “Scarred by Many Past Frustrations” focused on two major groups: Helena and Sarah, Felix, S, and Gracie. The episode had a constant tension that left me nervous until the very end.

The Castor organization makes their first mistake when they put Sarah in the cell directly next to Helena. Helena confronts Sarah through the vent about giving her up to the Castor clones, and Sarah begs Helena to believe the truth. We learn that Helena keeps track of the time in her head and knows exactly when the soldiers show up to give her food.

Sarah yells to Helena that the boy clones are their brothers, and Helena looks very intrigued. The Castor clone in uniform takes Sarah to talk to the Castor mother, and they take about a gallon of blood from her. Meanwhile, Helena stores her butter packet in a secret location for later use. When they return Sarah to her cell, Paul comes to talk to her. He tells her that all she had to do was stay out of the way and she never would have been in a cell. I have never liked Paul and I am generally furious whenever he is on screen, but it was hilarious to hear Helena make kissing noises through the vent at him. Team Helena in every situation!

Sarah tells Helena about how she was irresponsible and absent for the first years of Kira’s life and how she doesn’t have tips for Helena because she wasn’t around to be a proper mother. Helena and Sarah resolve to escape together, and Sarah creates a fight to get her into the sick bay to steal some tweezers.

Helena uses the tweezers to unlock the cuffs around her legs and uses the cuffs to break a bar on her cell door. She slithers out of the small hole with the butter all over her body, all while trying to avoid the camera’s gaze. She shuts off the camera, and the security man watching the camera immediately sees it. My first thought was “Why would you shut off the camera? It draws more attention to you!” but then, of course, Helena kills the man as soon as he walks in, in a really horrible nail-through-the-skull way.

Helena leaves a crying Sarah alone in her cell to escape. She does a number of acrobatic moves to scale the walls of the base and sits atop the outer wall watching the lead Castor clone initiate a search for her. Helena debates going back for Sarah, but escapes anyway. I know this isn’t the last we’ve seen of her, and I’m sure she will be back to save Sarah.

The second half of the episode led to a huge reveal: the Castor clones are sleeping with women and recording who the women are in booklets, and each of these women are getting sick. One of these girls is Gracie, who has quite an adventure with S and Felix before collapsing on their living room floor. Later, we see Art meeting with the woman from the unwanted threesome at the beginning of this season’s second episode, and she reveals that she is also experiencing eye pain.

We get a nice bit of Cosima going on a date with a girl named Shea, but the most mysterious part is certainly that someone took pictures of their date. Who is Shea and does she have an ulterior motive? Most likely. Trust no one, Clone Club! No kidding, this episode was a wild one, just like last week’s. I’m so glad the season is taking off this way!
