Each season of The Voice is heralded as “the best season ever” with “the most talented artists yet.” When it comes down to it, though, this is just a ploy to get viewers to tune in each week and see what all the hype is about. So while this season may be advertised as the best yet, I’m reluctant to agree with that. Three of the remaining contestants left are impressive in their talent, but the other two just don’t belong in the Top 5 of a season that is supposed to have only the most talented singers. One of those two will most likely be leaving the show tonight, giving us a finale full of strong competition. But America has gotten it wrong before, and there’s no guarantees for anyone left.
For Team Adam’s only remaining singer, Joshua Davis, there’s a decent chance of making it to the finale. Although there was nothing all that exciting about his first performance, it was right in Joshua’s wheelhouse. He nails the emotional love songs as they fit his raspy vocals perfectly. At the same time though, boring at this stage of competition isn’t a good thing, especially when you’re the first performer of the night. He made up for that in his second song, which was much more fun, despite his voice being drowned out a bit by the accordion. On top of that, his hometown visit won him points, as it was clear how much all of this has meant to him. Overall, I think he played his cards right, and I expect him to be in the finale, despite the fact that he can’t stack up to some of the other contestants vocally.
Koryn Hawthorne is arguably the most improved contestant this season. Every week, she has continued to get better, and while it took me a while to warm up to her, she’s now one of my favorites. Her vocals aren’t always spot on, but they don’t have to be because it’s clear that she’s one hundred percent invested in what she’s singing. Koryn isn’t afraid to put herself out there and doesn’t hide anything, which is refreshing to see in such a young artist. Both of her songs last night showcased this, as she brought the power and emotion into what she sang.
Despite having had a chance at the music industry before, Meghan Linsey has become my favorite this season. There’s something so compelling about her voice and the way she performs as she makes you feel every lyric and hang on to every word she sings. While the song Blake chose for her last night wasn’t a great fit, she poured herself into it and was committed to moment. Her second song, which she picked for herself, was even better, as she returned to what she does best and showed off her raspy vocals with a country song.
India Carney has narrowly escaped elimination twice now, and if I have my way, she won’t make the finals. There’s no doubt that she has talent, but compared to the rest of the remaining contestants, it’s just not enough. Her first song of the night was all over the place as she missed some important notes. For such an emotional song, her voice wasn’t powerful enough. I might be in the minority in not liking that performance, but I feel the song needed more than she was able to bring to it. Her second song was much better vocally and emotionally, in my opinion, as it was more in her range. America has saved her multiple times, and I’m starting to think they’re seeing something I’m not in her. Tonight we’ll find out if they’re willing to save her again, though.
Pharrell picked a poignant song for Sawyer to sing last night, with everything that’s been happening in our country. For some reason, though, his performance didn’t pack the emotional punch that I’m used to from Sawyer. Maybe it’s because it’s a song we’ve all heard so many times before, but it kind of felt like he was going through the motions. However, Sawyer still brought his own unique vibe to it, and when the song picked up at the end, I remembered why I fell in love with his voice. His second song choice of the night, this time chosen by him, was a bit of a head-scratcher as it didn’t fit in with what he usually does. But Sawyer proved that even though you wouldn’t think that his voice would compliment every song, it does. He’s one of the few who can sing anything and make it his own, and it’s that talent that could win him this whole competition.
