As the fate of NBC’s DC supernatural drama Constantine’s future still remains up in the air, the show pulled some big moves last night in its penultimate episode of the season before the finale next week and, in addition, gave Manny (Harold Perrineau) a lot of focus.
I wasn’t really getting what was up with the villain of this week other than that it was shreds of a black diamond (also known as the DC Comics villain Elicpso’s black diamond if my information is correct) that was causing certain people at a hospital to go all crazy. Honestly, other than the diamond being something from the comics, I didn’t care too much about the actual obstacle in this episode. However, I loved all the interactions between the main characters as they actually had more scenes together than ever before.
The best thing about this entire episode was, without a doubt, Manny becoming human after John made him into one. I have been dying to see a great Manny episode for a long time now, but I never imagined that it would be this fun. As he is trying to investigate the case with John in the body of a doctor, Manny gets a great taste of human life, including getting intimate with a nurse. While we won’t go into details, if you watched the episode, then answer us this: wasn’t THAT part of the intimate scene a lot for an 8 PM show?
So why did John trap Manny? Well, he took out his anger at Manny when he had learned that Zed, who hasn’t been feeling to well for the past few weeks, found out that she has a tumor and that is what is causing her to get these visions. The whole conversation about whether or not it was a gift from God, and while I don’t want to get into a religious conversation, I would really scratch my head big time if that was the case. Nonetheless, it gave us a fantastic scene between her and Manny as she is now also able to see him as we saw at the end of the episode. I’m not sure whether to be concerned or thrilled that she can see him now, but it was cool to see Manny being part of stopping the bad guy, who turned out to be Zed’s doctor.
Overall, “Angels and Ministers of Grace” was a solid episode for the characters of Zed and Manny, but as a penultimate episode before a season (or possibly series) finale, it didn’t really set anything up for the finale next week. I can understand that, at the time, when they wrote this episode, they probably didn’t know if they were getting the backorder-nine, but at the same time as a writer you need to have that in mind that your season finale might be the 13th episode. I’m looking forward to see what will take place next week and have hope that enough people will tune in for NBC to make the right decision to renew the show for a second season.
Don’t miss the season finale of Constantine, titled “Waiting for the Man,” next Friday, 8/7c on NBC!
