Five Arrow and Flash Spin-Off Miniseries We Want to See: The Atom and Firestorm

Arrow

Since the early 2000’s has been comic book and superhero properties from both DC Comics as well as Marvel Comics have been come incredibly popular in both film and television. Right now on TV, we have Arrow, The Flash, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Constantine, and Gotham, and it doesn’t stop there as CBS has Supergirl in development, which has already been given a series, with both Melissa Benoist and Mehcad Brooks in lead roles, and is slated to premiere this fall.

On the Marvel side of things, we are getting five Netflix series starting with Marvel’s Daredevil, followed by A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and then the mini-series The Defenders that will bring those four heroes together. There are even more shows in development with TNT (hopefully) bringing Titans to live-action, SyFy developing a Krypton TV show and The CW possibly giving Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer from Arrow an Atom spin-off. As you can see, it’s a great time right now to be a comic book fan as you have so many shows currently on the air and many more to come soon.

To follow up a little bit about that supposed Atom spin-off, this week, my colleague Blaise Hopkins and will be pitching ideas for CW spin-offs that could work really well as mini-series, bridging the gap between breaks that Arrow and The Flash take. The format would be that some of these mini-series (consisting of around five to eight episodes) would air when Arrow and The Flash are on hiatus, just like how Agent Carter is currently on air while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on its break. Our first possible spinoff would be Atom/Firestorm.

Pitch: Arrow’s Ray Palmer/The Atom (Brandon Routh) and The Flash’s Firestorm/Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) and Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber) join forces as a superhero duo.

Firestorm The Flash

Andy Behbakht: One thing that Arrow currently struggles a little with (and something that The Flash might get into as well in future seasons) is that it’s starting to get very crowded in Starling City. While I’m not sure how I would feel about an Atom spin-off, even though I truly love Routh’s character and what they are setting up for him as The Atom, I think there is a way you can make it work with a little bit of both worlds. We haven’t seen completely yet what Firestorm will be like on The Flash, but something that doesn’t exist right now, as a comic book show, is a team-up show. It still surprises me why Iron Fist and Luke Cage got individual shows as opposed to an Heroes for Hire show. But I think, for DC, it would be kind of a neat thing to bring one hero from each show and put them together on one show.

Blaise Hopkins: I think that The Atom and Firestorm would be very easy to pair together if the network wanted to give them a spin-off. We know that Ray is going to guest star on The Flash when he travels with Felicity to possibly get some opinions and help with the ATOM suit. While there, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Caitlin ask her for some help on how to cure or at least get Ronnie back. Ray is a man of projects who always needs to keep himself occupied and shares the pain of losing his fiancée/spouse and could easily find interest in Firestorm, how he works, and discover a way to cure him, therefore leading to a team-up show where they fight crime and are seeking a cure. The only concern I would have for this show is the budget for the special effects and how much it would cost to have the Atom shrink and grow in size while Firestorm is constantly ablaze. The show could possibly work around this by creating scenarios where only one power would be needed at a time, thereby sort of bouncing back and forth between which power they choose to show, or by having their fights be done at normal size and fist to fist combat as seen in Arrow or The Flash.

Come back tomorrow as we will give our second suggestion, but in the mean time, let us know in the comments below what you think. Would you like to see a team-up show between Arrow‘s Atom and The Flash‘s Firestorm?
