Growing up is a crash course in awkwardness. There’s the first attempt at talking to a crush, the friend whose advice somehow makes everything worse and the conversation with your parents that you’d rather erase from memory entirely. Painful as they are at the time, those moments have a funny way of turning into the stories we laugh about most, and cartoonist Kendall Lyons has made a habit of capturing them on paper.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Lyons is a cartoonist, writer and minister who creates the webcomic “By and By”. The series follows an 11-year-old autistic boy as he tries to make sense of middle school, friendship and the world around him, often with a little help from friends who drag him into wild misadventures. Lyons draws on his own experiences with faith, ADHD and autism, which gives his comics an honesty that goes beyond the punchlines.
Beneath the jokes, though, there’s real warmth. Lyons’ characters feel insecure, excited, anxious and deeply loyal to one another, and it’s that mix of humor and heart that keeps readers coming back. Scroll down to relive a few of growing up’s most awkward moments, and visit his Instagram for more.
