“Looks Almost Alive”: 72 Strange Buildings That Prove Architects Don’t Always Play By The Rules

In a world filled with sterile office parks, concrete apartments, and uniform glass towers, some architects choose creativity and color. They let the most random things inspire them — a pineapple, an elephant, even a toilet.

Bored Panda has collected some of the most bizarre and hilarious architectural choices from every corner of the planet. These designers took one look at traditional blueprints and decided to throw them completely out the window. The results are fascinating and quite impossible to ignore.

Scroll down for some beautiful, weird, and strange buildings. And don’t miss the one designed in the shape of a low-flush Western toilet.

Earlier, buildings and neighborhoods celebrated bold hues on their exteriors — like San Francisco’s iconic Victorian-era “Painted Ladies” or London’s pastel-drenched Notting Hill terraces. The ’80s art scene was also a hub of color, driven by the rise of urban hip-hop and graffiti culture.

But today, modern cities are dominated by shades of grey, beige, and sterile glass. This shift traces back to Brutalism and Modernism — architectural movements that prioritized raw, unadorned industrial materials like exposed steel and plain concrete. Brands like Apple further popularized this minimalist aesthetic, turning sleek, metallic palettes into the global standard for high-tech living. Today, that same modern minimalism has taken over our living spaces, with more and more people opting for muted, neutral interiors.

But as this list shows, some architects refuse to blend in. It’s a refreshing reminder that real-life design can still be fun and wonderfully weird.

#5 It’s A Toilet, It’s A House, It’s A Toilet House!

This toilet-shaped house in Suwon, South Korea is named Haewoojae, which means “a place of sanctuary where one can solve one’s worries.”

It was built in 2007 by a Sim Jae-deok, the founder of World Toilet Association to bring attention to the world’s sanitation problems.

But what makes a building truly strange? According to Imogen Fortes, author of ‘Weird Buildings,’ they are structures built to amuse, “to stop us in our tracks, to force us to reimagine what architecture can be — or all of the above.”

Fortes notes: “They ignore the conventional architectural script. Many rebel against the rigid logic of right angles, rectangles and the restrained. Instead, they stretch and curve, bulge and tilt. Many feel sculptural and more like living organic organisms than static objects, and are as much about form as function.”

Many eccentric buildings also stem from a deep, personal interest. For example, late South Korean politician Sim Jae-duck spent decades campaigning for global sanitation reform. To mark his crusade, he tore down his family home and rebuilt it as a giant, toilet bowl-shaped museum named Haewoojae — meaning “a place to relieve worries.”

Obsession drives architectural oddities elsewhere, too. In Ohio, basket mogul Dave Longaberger spent years insisting his company headquarters look precisely like a giant, seven-story picnic basket complete with two massive, heated handles.

When people tried to discourage him, he quipped: “If they can put a man on the moon, they can certainly build a building that’s shaped like a basket.”

Some weird building designs are also courtesy of pure architectural rebels. For example, Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser hated straight lines. He built wave-shaped apartments topped with living trees and rooftop forests. City planners thought he was crazy, but clients loved him.

He was not alone. Catalonia’s Antoni Gaudí filled Barcelona with melting stone towers and colorful mosaic roofs. Later, Frank Gehry crumpled steel sheets to build wild, twisting concert halls in Sydney that defy gravity.

Bold architecture does more than turn heads. Urban designers and neuroscientists now realize that city layouts shape our inner lives far more than we once believed.

Our brains register cities at a biological level. Specialized cells in the hippocampus constantly map the geometry and layout of our surroundings. Dr. Colin Ellard, an environmental psychologist at the University of Waterloo, has shown that building exteriors deeply sway our daily moods. When people walk past rich, detailed, and complex facades, their stress drops and focus sharpens. When they face blank, flat, and repetitive walls, their minds drift into boredom and fatigue.

“When people are bored, for example, they excrete more cortisol — the stress hormone — and we know from all kinds of other work that chronically high levels of cortisol are bad for your health. We haven’t been able to connect all of the dots ourselves yet… but the links are certainly there to suggest that that aspect of urban design has an actual public health impact,” says Dr. Ellard.

In a study done in Iceland, participants wearing virtual reality headsets walked through various virtual streets. They reported feeling much more alert and engaged on roads with greater architectural variety.

More recent studies show that people generally feel calmer and happier inside rooms built with soft, rounded curves rather than sharp, sterile right angles. Interestingly, trained design students often prefer the rigid boxes — proving how professional training can override natural human instincts.

Research also shows that growing up surrounded by concrete uniformity can dramatically increase the risk for mental health struggles.

We cannot tear down our cities and completely rebuild them out of pineapples and picnic baskets (even though that would be awesome). But we do need more architects who aren’t afraid to break the rut and design something wonderful.

At the same time, we can all do our bit. The next time you pick up a paintbrush, skip the safe beige. Hang a weird painting that makes no sense. Let your home reflect a bit of color and chaos… because life is too short to live inside a boring box.
