Growing up in Verona, New Jersey, Jon Ferguson Mohr was influenced by his parents; his father, Jon Wood Mohr, worked as a marketing executive, and his mother, Iva Jean Ferguson, was a nurse. He has two sisters, Julia and Virginia.
Mohr attended Verona High School, graduating in 1988, where he was also captain of the wrestling team. He began performing stand-up comedy as a teenager, quickly finding his calling on stage.

Over his career, Jay Mohr has had several notable relationships, including marriages to Nicole Chamberlain and Nikki Cox. He is currently married to Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss.
