Out of 79 horror films that take place during Christmas which one would you think would be the best? Well to be honest it’s very subjective like everything else so you might not agree with the list below but you can possibly agree that they are among the best simply because they’re a step above a lot of them and offer a good time at the movies along with a few quality thrills that leave you wondering just how your own Christmas might go this year. Just kidding, horror at Christmas time seems like a strange thing for a lot of folks to contemplate but it seems to do fairly well some years when such films are presented to the public. After all, why should Halloween get all the good scares? Christmas horror though is usually bound to come with some sort of comedy be it dark or otherwise, so you know the films will be enjoyable the more diverse they are.
Surviving Halloween is just the beginning, getting through Christmas is often the hard part when it comes to the movies.
5. Silent Night, Deadly Night
Two young boys witness the murder of their parents by a man in a Santa outfit and are later on raised in an orphanage. Eventually one of them, Billy, has a psychotic break when he is forced to play the role of Santa for his workplace and goes on a killing spree only to be stopped finally by his brother who shoots him in the back. It’s not a very merry Christmas in this tale.
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Jack Skellington dreams of something more than his life in the land of Halloween and one day stumbles into the land of Christmas where he comes upon the many different facets of life that he quickly tries to adopt for his own ideas. Things go extremely kooky and Jack is eventually blown out of the sky when he attempts to take Santa’s place, leading to the realization that Halloween is just fine and that Christmas needs to be left to Santa.
3. Krampus
Krampus is an ancient legend that is basically the antithesis of Santa Claus. He doesn’t come to give presents or joy, he comes to take and to punish those that have been naughty. Just like Saint Nicholas however he doesn’t work alone, he has a multitude of dark, shadowy helpers that will do his bidding and take care of those that have been naughty.
2. Black Christmas
A deranged killer has escaped from a mental facility and is on his way home. The only problem is that his home, where he brutally murdered his family, is now a sorority house that is currently occupied since a snowstorm has kept anyone from traveling. Eventually the girls come to realize that the former occupant of the home is back, and he’s not willing to share.
1. Gremlins
It’s funny to think that a guy who doesn’t know anything about a pet that he wants for his kid would think that it would be a good idea, but that’s how movie logic works I suppose. The gremlins pretty much take over the town once they gain the numbers and reveal their darker, more mischievous nature.
Merry Christmas indeed.
