We all know that even love doesn’t last forever; but in the world of Hollywood, it almost seems as if fairytales could come true. The love lives of celebrities are always under scrutiny that we somehow find ourselves witnesses to their development and demise. There have been many celebrity couples we were sure would make it in Hollywood. Alas, even the best of them fall in the hands of the giant industry. We’ve come up with 20 celebrity couples that everyone thought were going to make it last forever. While some of these couples actually moved on to better partners, unfortunately for some, this wasn’t the case.
Here are 20 celebrity couples everyone thought would make it but didn’t:
1. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
America’s original sweethearts, Brad and Jen were perfect together. They had the looks and they had the success. However, it became clear around that time that Brad was getting on a different career level than Jen, who was more a TV personality than anything at the time. After a movie with another hot actress, Angelina Jolie, Brad took the leap and left Jen for Angelina. Fortunately for Jen, her career took off shortly after, even making her the highest paid movie and television actress for a while. She’s also now happily married to actor Justin Theroux. As for Brad and Angelina, they somehow manage to find themselves on this list later on.
2. Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet
Talented, beautiful, and exotic, these two were such a pair. The two claims that age was to blame for their fallout. Lenny and Lisa eloped when she was only 20 years old. They had a baby together, the now famous actress Zoë Kravitz, and stayed together for several years before separating. Lisa said that their relationship was wonderful for the most part, and they remain to be best friends to this day. Lisa now has a family of her own and considers Lenny to still be a big part of that. They all get together and they all get along, so it probably did work out for the better.
3. Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez
We all thought that J.Lo might have found the one when she got married to Marc Anthony. After all, they share so many similarities in life. They’re both of Puerto Rican descent; they’re both musically talented; they’re both rich and highly successful. But maybe similarities are not the key to a long-lasting marriage because even after having twins together, they still ended up getting divorced. They were together for 7 years before Jennifer called it quits. She stated that her life with Marc was falling apart, something that the public never really saw. For Jennifer, the hardest part was handling it with the kids. She continues to date now and Marc is doing just the same.

Every year of their marriage, Seal and Heidi renewed their vows in front of family and friends. However, even this wasn’t enough as the couple announced their separation in 2012. They were together for only 7 years, although it seemed like forever to the rest of the world. The two are still amicable with each other and can often be seen attending events together.
5. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
This is one we really thought would go the ages, even longer than Brad with Jen. Brad and Angelina were the most iconic couple of our generation. They were awesome together. Ryan, on the other hand, has left the spotlight of Hollywood to pursue other business ventures.
7. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

It was an example of a movie-style love affair. American actor falls in love with French musician; they make art together and live a life of serenity in the French countryside. They make babies and live a normal family life outside of Hollywood. It sounded good and for a while it was the reality for Johnny and Vanessa. But all good things must somehow come to an end. They even did a wonderful job keeping their private life away from the media. Scarlett said that she couldn’t handle the long distances they almost always found themselves in. Their jobs are what really kept them apart and what eventually tore their marriage apart as well. Both have since moved on to better things in life.
11. Bruce Willis and Demi Moore
Bruce and Demi were Hollywood’s power couple for a long time. They both dominated the movie industry in the 90s and each had their own successes. Many people wondered what ultimately caused their separation. With such a beautiful family, it was difficult to imagine that anything could separate the two. However, it seemed that their relationship had been in the rocks for quite some time before they finally decided to divorce. Khloe says that she’ll always love Lamar, but she’s definitely moved on with her life.
14. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart
For fans of the Twilight series, it became a dream come true when Robert and Kristen made their relationship official. The chemistry these two had on-screen was just undeniable. As the characters they played on the movies literally end up being together forever, it almost jinxed their real life relationship in a way. Throughout the years, you can tell that Robert and Kristen are beginning to grow apart. What finally broke them off was when Kristen was caught cheating on Robert with her movie director. It was public and it was ugly. It definitely was devastating for many fans that really saw these two ending up in the altar. Robert is now engaged to another while Kristen is exploring her sexuality. How bizarre.
15. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens
High School Musical sweethearts Zac and Vanessa were just the cutest. They both were Disney stars, so you knew they were both talented. Being Disney kids, unfortunately, means they also had a raging desire to break off from their teen images. Vanessa often said that it was very difficult to date Zac because of how much of a heartthrob he was. Maybe it was insecurity, but Vanessa couldn’t stand all the female attention Zac constantly got. The two dated for 5 years after meeting on the set of High School Musical. After their break up, they pursued their careers independently and have both done well for themselves.
16. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez
Although it might’ve been foolish to think that Justin and Selena were going to be together forever considering how young they were and where they were at in their careers. Although Justin had already found incredible success at such a young age, he was still just coming to his own. The same went for Selena. She was also a successful Disney starlet but wanted to get the musical career of her dreams. They were the picture of love in all its innocence. After they broke up for the first time, they ended up getting back together and breaking it off again a few times. Selena has now finally moved on with her new beau, the Weeknd, and Justin is now focused more than ever in his career.
17. Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough
These TV personalities were almost a match made in heaven. They definitely looked the part on screen, and they also made us believe it. Ryan and Julianne looked so good together, it made us think of future weddings and babies. However, Julianne Hough claims that nothing in their relationship ever felt right. There was a lot of fear going on inside her, fear of getting hurt, of being alone. Their busy schedules kept them apart more than together, and it caused a lot of strain in their relationship. The couple has since moved on after breaking up their short-lived 3-year relationship.
18. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
If there’s a Hollywood couple that could make it work, we thought it was going to be Ben and Jen. Actually, they still try to make it work even though they are now divorced. Ben and Jen are co-parenting their children and still continue to live together even though they are separated. They have cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their separation, but they have continued to be good friends. They have three children together, and while Ben continues to be successful in his acting career, Jen has slowed down a little bit to focus more on their family. The two got married in 2005 and filed for divorce in 2015.
19. Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore
As much as people hated on these two after they got together, everyone eventually realized that they actually did like each other–a lot. Demi and Ashton were so far apart in age that people didn’t think it would actually work out. Some even believe that it was just a publicity stunt. However, pictures soon started to surface of Ashton spending time with Demi and her daughters and we knew that it was more serious than just a fling. It was so serious, in fact, that the two got married in 2005 and stayed married until 2013. That was more than anyone expected, but after a while, we kind of got used to the couple and of course, wished for them to hit forever. Unfortunately, it didn’t end as we’d hoped.
20. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
The two met while filming one of the most romantic movies ever made, so it was only natural for these two to fall in love. Of course, the rest of us wanted them to stay together, especially since their story in The Notebook was just the type of love anybody would ever want. However good these two were on screen didn’t really translate off screen. They were often found arguing and fighting, and despite of their tumultuous love for each other, they really inspired the worst in each other. Ryan and Rachel will be best remembered as Noah and Ally in the movie and nothing more.
