10 Things You Didn’t Know about Lee Pace

You get the feeling you recognize him don’t you? Lee Pace has one of those faces that’s hard to hide but can still be done up in makeup and prostheses so as to make him appear different but still maddeningly familiar. If you haven’t guessed by now he played the part of King Thranduil in the Hobbit movies. As you can tell he does manage to play a haughty character quite easily, but in person he’s actually kind of shy and isn’t at all the type to look down upon people. He is quite the charmer though according to some and he does know his way around the industry. It’s a testament to his acting that he’s able to stand in front of the camera and become an entirely different person as he gets into character. Once he’s doing his thing on camera it’s really hard to tell that he gets nervous around others at times. He’s just that good.

Here are a few other things you might not have known about Lee.

10. He had to lose 25 pounds for a role once.

There are a number of actors that haven’t bothered to use CGI or other methods to change their appearance and have gone full on hardcore to try and alter their shape, size, or appearance. This isn’t the most drastic measure ever taken but it’s certainly not considered entirely healthy when done more than a few times.

9. Lee loves to travel.

Some people love to just go home if possible when the working day is done and others love to get up and go. Those that love to travel seem to have a kind of wanderlust that doesn’t allow them to sit still for very long, though even those folks do occasionally like to touch down at home base just to normalize their lives for a moment before they’re on the go again.

8. His family had to move about 10 times when he was growing up.

Lee’s father was an oil man so the family had to go where the work was occasionally. It’s not an easy life having to move all the time but you do tend to get see more of the world than others that stay in one place all their lives.

7. He had to play the part of a paraplegic in a film.

In fact the director the film actually made most of those that were working on it with him believe that Lee was paralyzed in real life. Unfortunately the makeup artist that came in believed it as well and when the poor person saw Lee standing up waiting they collapsed.

6. Pace is 2 years younger than Orlando Bloom.

This worked in the film since elves are so long-lived that they don’t age as much as humans do and could easily pass for being the same age in appearance. But yes, Orlando is 2 years older than his on screen ‘father’.

5. Lee auditioned for the role of Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 1

It’s probably better that he was given the part of Ronan the Accuser since it doesn’t seem like Star Lord would have worked out quite as well. He doesn’t really have the look for it and Chris Pratt definitely had the right attitude for the role.

4. He was considered for a role in Hannibal.

Lee was being considered for the role of Will Graham, the lead detective, but he had another engagement that he had to pursue and therefore had to miss out. He did turn down a guest role as well.

3. He had to wear blue contact lenses for his role in The Hobbit.

One has to recall that the elves had to look a certain way for the movie, and since Lee’s eyes are quite dark he had to wear contact lenses to make it appear that his eyes were the color that was desired for the film.

2. Pace kept his elf ears and sword after the last Hobbit movie.

A lot of times you’ll hear about the props being taken by the actors or bought, but apparently no one had a problem with Lee taking his props with him after the movie was over. One has to wonder if they’ll ever appear at an auction, where of course they’ll go for an insane price due to the nature of collector’s.

1. Lee injured his shoulder on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy.

There’s not a lot of information on how he did this but considering that an action movie will from time to time test the mettle of the actors it’s not hard to assume that it either came during a fight scene or a strenuous moment that wasn’t fully expected to go wrong.

On another interesting note he did instigate the dance battle while the cameras were off and it made it onto the DVD extras.
