Darling in the FranXX is a science fiction anime that was first announced to the public in July of 2017 at the Trigger Anime Expo panel. It’s a television series about a group of young pilots who battle against Klgiant klaxosaur monsters in machines which are feminine robots called FranXX. The setting is futuristic in the post-apocalyptic earth and it’s a dismal environment.
If you’ve heard of Darling in Franxx and are considering watching it, here are 10 things that you didn’t know about it that you should before you tune in.
1. The pilots have no personal identities
We know one another by our names and it’s one the things that we identify with as individuals. The pilots in this anime do not have this luxury. They are known merely by their roles and these are pilots. They don’t know anything about the world outside of their domains so they identify as “pilot.” When the ability to pilot is taken away from Hiro, the questions his worth.
2. Darling in the FranXX has stirred some controversy
This new anime is one that doesn’t seem to have much middle ground when it comes to the opinions of viewers. They either hate it or love it. It’s generated more than its share of controversy because of the mature content. The lovers call it a coming of age story that is exciting and gives them a decent plot to follow while others refer to it as lacking in coherence thematically. The reviews are very much a mixed bag and there are few if any who take a middle of the road stance about its merit.
3. Darling in the FranXX generated a few death threats
Some people who tuned in for the first season of Darling in the FranXX were so disturbed by it that they went to an extreme with their response. The people working on the project at A-1 studio actually received death threats. It seems that these viewers were highly displeased with the voice actors and they leveled their anger towards them.
4. The animation is top-notch
One of the best things about this anime television series is the quality of the animation. Not all anime can boast of the quality that Darling in the FranXX can. It’s beautifully done with black borders and enhancements that make the visuals flow. If you don’t like the voices of the characters, you have to at least appreciate the art form and the way that the view makes a really cool transition from a typical anime full screen to a more movie-esque view. It’s nothing short of brilliant. The characters are nicely done n their visual representations which is something that we’ve heard very few complaints about.
5. The character development moves at a good pace
One of the chief complaints about many of the new anime is the slow pace of the character development. Darling in the FranXX handles this quite well. It’s not as predictable as most and there are plenty of surprises written into the scripts. The transitions in personality and view changes go over and above for an anime. If you like the content then you’re in for a thrilling season of surprises and anticipation for the next episode with this anime. While this isn’t the opinion of everyone who’s seen it, the old saying different strokes for different folks definitely applies.
6. It’s been compared to Naruto
Anime lovers who have a diverse knowledge of how this unique genre of animation film understand how to dissect the elements of each new program and find the good and the bad in each. When it comes to character development and an interesting plot that is easy to follow and actually exciting, some fans see the better elements of Naruto and Violet Evergarden in this anime and some even like it more than Naruto and give it a high ranking. Again, there are two camps when it comes to Darling in the FranXX and these are the lovers and the haters.
7. You can read the Manga if you like
Kentaro Yabuki has developed an adaptation of the manga in a four-panel comic strip which makes for easier reading and it’s been turned into a wries that was released on the Shonen Jump+ website in January of 2018. The last edition of the for panel version by Mato ended in July of 2018 with a full-color book that was released in October of this year and available for purchase if you want to read the adaptation and compare it with the animation.
8. 24 episodes have been made
So far, there have been 24 episodes of the Darling in the Franxx episode completed. It’s recently been disclosed hat Funimation has licensed the Darling in the Franxx series and is streaming it with an English dub while Anipulus Asia has made it available in Southeast Asia. The director of the series is Atsushi Nishigori with Naotaka Hayashi in charge of the composition for the series. Masayoshi Tanaka is credited with the character design and the mechanical designer is Shegeto Koyama. The excellent action animation director is Hiroyuki Imaishi and this is one of the elements of the anime that has received the highest accolades.
9. If you love the music you can own the soundtrack
Fans will be happy to know that a soundtrack album for Darling in the Franxx has been released in a series of volumes. Volume one came out on April 25 of 2018 followed by the second volume on July 25, 2018, and the third on August 29, 2018.
10. Darling in the FranXX is an award-winning anime
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who love the anime that it received a nomination for Anime of the Year for the Anime Trending Awards for 2019. It also took the award for Best Sci-Fi or Mecha along with Best Action/Adventure in the Anime’s Trending Winter 2018 Anime Awards.
