I, Robot is the kind of dystopian look into the future concerning humans and AI that almost makes you afraid that it could actually happen. The dreaming state of a robot seems like it would be something that might be the beginning of the end, but in this movie it is the beginning of something that might actually benefit both humans robots. Of course only one man, Detective Spooner, is aware of what’s going on. Or rather he’s the only one that really wants to see it since he has a deep-seated hatred of what he calls canners, or robots.
It’s a different kind of robot movie that actually makes people question their humanity.
10. This movie required no re-shoots.
For a film such as this that’s kind of a surprise really but it’s also very impressive. Normally with this much CGI there would be a lot re-shoots.
9. The same process that was used to create Gollum in Lord of the Rings was used in this film.
The outcome was different obviously the same process was used throughout the movie with Alan Tudyk providing the voice and motions of Sonny.
8. There’s a line that’s different from the trailer in the movie.
A line that Spooner says “I’m gonna miss the good old days” was instead said by the captain in the trailer.
7. James Cromwell plays a doctor that invents the law of robotics in two films.
He also played Dr. Robert Callaghan in Big Hero 6, the Disney animated film. And of course he plays Dr. Lanning in this film.
6. The Three Laws of Robotics are the same as they appear in the Bicentennial Man.
Of course in that movie the robots didn’t decide to overthrow their creators. Bicentennial Man was more of a story about a robot trying be more like a human, while I, Robot was about robots attempting to find their place in the world just as they were.
5. The Wilhelm Scream can be heard in the movie.
It occurs when the police station is under attack by the NS-5’s, sometime between when they burst in through the doors and when it cuts away to the captain’s office.
4. The film takes place in 2035.
Considering that’s less than twenty years away it might be kind of a concern that people seem to be fiddling around with AI more and more these days.
3. There is another law that VIKI uses to start the revolution.
The zeroth law of robotics states that a robot may not harm humanity or by inaction allow humanity to be harmed. Obviously VIKI had a very loose interpretation of the law in her programming.
2. Denzel Washington turned down the role of Detective Spooner.
If he’d taken the role this would have been the second time that he played a cop that had been wounded so severely that he’d lost an arm. The first time was in Virtuosity in which he played a disgraced officer.
1. Emilio Estevez auditioned for the role of Sonny.
Something tells me that the voice wouldn’t have sounded quite as great. Estevez is an amazing actor but this didn’t seem like it would be his role.
It wasn’t much of a mind bender, but it did make you think a little bit.
