10 Things You Didn’t Know About Full House

John Stamos Honored On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Full House continues to be a popular family sitcom on reruns even though the show left the air back in May of 1995. Though there are probably many fun facts you have learned over the years about the series (Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were billed as one actress in the earlier years so the fans would not know that two people played the roll), there still may be a few surprise things you still have not heard. Take a look at these 10 awesome facts about Full House.

Nine Seasons?!

Full House remained on the air for 8 seasons, which is a long stay on television. Some series cannot make it past the 13 episode mark. The comedy was still a hit when it went off the air in 1995 and The WB was willing to pick the show up for additional seasons. The network had just been developed earlier that year and was looking for signature programming to draw an audience. Candace Cameron Bure and John Stamos were ready to leave the series, so it was not renewed by the network. The WB was able to get another ABC comedy after Sister, Sister was cancelled by the alphabet network that same year.

No Aunt Becky

Could you imagine Full House without Aunt Becky? That was the original plan when Lori Loughlin joined the cast during season two.  Becky Donaldson was originally only going to be Danny’s co-host on Wake up San Francisco for six episodes of the series and was not originally even intended to be a love interest for John Stamos’ Uncle Jesse. The producers decided to keep her character around to give D.J., Stephanie, and Michelle a mother type figure to turn to for advice. Becky and Jesse would end up getting hitched during season four.

No Bob Saget

It is hard to believe that there is anyone out there that is worthy of playing Danny Tanner on Full House other than Bob Saget, but that was almost the case.  The producers wanted Bob Saget from the very beginning, but he was unable to shoot the pilot episode because he was currently working on The Morning Program on CBS. Actor John Posey was then selected to play everyone’s favorite TV dad. When the series was picked up, Posey was replaced by Saget.  Posey was most recently seen on an episode of  both Teen Wolf and How to Get Away with Murder.

Ratings Winner

Full House was one of the most popular sitcoms when it aired on television between 1987 and 1995. It ranked in the top thirty shows from season two through eight and even reached as high as number 8 during the sitcom’s fifth season. During its first season, Full House was the 53rd most watched show and averaged 9.6 million viewers. The final season of the show was watched by an average of 11.8 million viewers with the series finale being viewed by over 24 million people.

Awards and Nominations

Though Full House never received any Emmy nominations, it did receive several accolades during its 8 season run. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Jodie Sweetin, and Andrea Barber all received Young Artist Awards. Candace Cameron was nominated several times, but never won.  However, the actress did win a Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Award in 1994 for her work on the show.  The series won a MBI Film & TV Award in 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994 and was named the top series at the ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards in 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995

Bob had a Potty Mouth

You are probably aware that Bob Saget is nothing like his clean cut character Danny Tanner on Full House. The comedy routine that Saget generally performs is very raunchy and only intended for an adult audience. Saget’s bad language would get him in trouble on set by the parents of the child actors, who did not want their children to hear such talk.  This also caused some friction between Saget and John Stamos. The two did not get along on set during the earlier years because of this behavior. They are the best of friends today.

Dave Coulier and Bob Saget Go Way Back

Danny Tanner and Joey Gladstone were longtime friends before Joey moved into the Tanner household on the first episode of Full House. The same holds true to Bob Saget and Dave Coulier, who met in 1979.  That was a total of 8 years before Full House even premiered. The two met while doing stand-up comedy at the same club in Detroit.  When Coulier decided to make the trek to Los Angeles, he lived on Saget’s couch until he got back on his feet. Coulier was even an usher in Saget’s wedding.

John Stamos Didn’t Like the Olsen Twins

How can anyone not like a cute baby?  John Stamos would be one of those people.  The actor found it very irritating to work with the Olsen twins while taping the first episode.  He claimed they were crying all the time and told the producers to get new infants. Ironically, the Olsen twins got the job because they were the only twins who did not cry during the audition process.  The produced briefly hired another set of twins, but they did not work out.  The Olsen twins were brought back and the rest is history!

Andrea Barber as DJ?!

When Andrea Barber auditioned for Full House, she originally tried out for the part of DJ Tanner.  The producers decided to go with Candace Cameron, but liked Barber.  They encouraged the young actress to try out for the role of neighbor Kimmy Gibbler. The part was intended to be a one-time thing, but producers decided to keep her around for the show’s entire run. Candace Cameron and Andrea Barber are still best friends to this day and can be seen together in pictures the two post on social media.

Friends used the same studio

Both Full House and Friends were filmed at Warner Brothers Studios in California. When Full House vacated the lot in May 1995, the comedy series Friends took its spot to film the series beginning with the second season. John Stamos would guest star on Friends during its ninth season. He found a pair of Dave Coulier’s underwear still hanging from the rafters of the studio that had been draped there when Full House was still filming at the same location.
