10 Things You Didn’t Know about 500 Days of Summer

10 Things You Didn’t Know about 500 Days of Summer

500 Days of Summer had some hard lessons that were felt throughout the movie and one of the most enticing was the fact that while true love does exist, it doesn’t always mean that it will exist with the person you want. Tom and Summer find this out throughout their many days together as she seems to stubbornly refuse to see what he wants to see and eventually leaves him because she’s not sure that he’s the one for her. Tom, being so invested in Summer, is obviously devastated, but when the two finally make peace with one another after her marriage it’s found that the woman he was looking for all along might have finally found him.

Here are a few facts from the movie that you might not have known about.

10. Joseph Gordon Leavitt’s favorite scene was the Hall & Oates dance number.

Who doesn’t love a good dance number? If you look close enough you can also see that everyone in this scene is wearing something blue except the lead.

9. The soundtrack features a lot of bands that broke up to mirror the breakup between Tom and Summer.

This was done in a sneaky but kind of cool way to make the breakup just a little more poignant and give a nice background to the film.

8. The park bench used for the movie is no longer accessible.

Following the movie it became a place where couples liked to go and just spend time, but it’s been cordoned off since then.

7. Summer was wearing something blue in every scene.

Supposedly this was done to highlight the actress’s stunning blue eyes, which when you think about it are really quite lovely.

6. One of the screenwriters claimed that three-quarters of the movie is about stuff that actually happened to him.

It seems reasonable to think that screenwriters will add in something from their own experience every once in a while just to spice things up.

5. The coloring and mood tend to change in accordance with how each day is going.

For good days the mood would be upbeat and the colors would be bright, for bad days it would be opposite and everything would look a bit dreary.

4. Summer did a pretty quick turnaround since she dumped Tom on day 290 and was married by day 476.

You could definitely call her the rebound queen, unless the story went that she had someone she’d met while seeing Tom and thus had a little something on the side.

3. Only buildings that were built before 1950 were used to give the film a classic look.

There’s something special about older buildings that just allow a film to take on a different look. It’s a quality that a lot of film makers tend to like.

2. The color red only appears twice, on purpose, in the film.

Red is usually the color passion, desire, and love. But in this film it only makes two purposeful appearances. Once in the origami bird in Summer’s apartment and then again near the end of the movie, as Autumn’s blouse is red.

1. If you’re doing your math Tom officially lets go of Summer on May 23rd when he meets Autumn after meeting Summer on January 8th.

That’s a fairly good length of time in between to develop a relationship. It’s no wonder why Tom was devastated.
