The Best Uses of Elton John Songs in Movies

Many of us can remember as children belting out the lyrics to Elton John’s most classic songs without really understanding them. Rocket Man was perhaps one of the most misunderstood and badly repeated songs in ages, and even now people still get the words wrong. In movies however his words come through loud and clear and are inspirational to this generation as they were to the previous ones. Elton John has done a lot in his career and continues to be a legend.

Here are just a few movies that showcase Elton John’s music in a way that speaks of how greatly it’s impacted society.

5. I’m Still Standing-Sing!

Feel free to give all the respect in the world to the cast of Sing!, especially when you consider that they did their own songs in this animated film. The part of Johnny was one that was rather despondent as he was a part of his father’s gang but in truth all he wanted to do was sing and perform. In an attempt to get the bail money for his dad’s release from jail Johnny signs up to win the prize only to learn later on that the prize isn’t so important as the chance to live his dream.

4. Bennie and The Jets-27 Dresses

A lot of people get the words wrong to Elton John songs, so much in fact that it’s almost an epidemic. Those that do understand the words and know them line for line often feel obliged to set those folks straight. This is to be expected since music lovers all over the world want to hear the tracks of their favorite artists sung correctly. In this film it even serves as a touching moment between the female lead and the man that wants to win her affection.

3. Rocket Man-The Rock

So this film gets the nod because of a reference more than anything. How it’s referenced and how it’s used however are just too cool to be left out.  Nicolas  Cage is facing off against a tougher than nails soldier and knows very well that he can’t win. Add onto that the fact that he’s holding a very volatile chemical weapon and the odds are invariably stacked against him. That momentum shifts however when the bad guy with the big knife steps in front of the big rocket that’s no longer a chemical threat. The Rocket Man takes on a whole new meaning as the soldier is blasted through the window and into a fatal free fall.

2. Tiny Dancer-Almost Famous

The unity felt in this song and in this scene is enough to give inspiration and hope to most anyone. A band that’s on the verge of being famous is still not quite the same as a band that made it. In this film  the lead actor is a young boy that must cover the ups and downs of the band Stillwater while trying to sort out his own life and what he wants to do with his future. Eventually things work out, but definitely not in the way that he’d hoped.

1. Can You Feel The Love Tonight-The Lion King

Out of all the movies that have used his voice and his talents, The Lion King is by far one of the greatest largely because he was so instrumental in its fame. Without Elton John this movie would have surely been a favorite, but it would not have been seen to be nearly as powerful for lack of his vocals.

Some musicians simply add to anything they do. Elton John is a man that has learned how to enhance everything he touches in a way that will no doubt be described as legendary to future generations.
