To this day Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night remains one of the most famous paintings in history. Artists have been recreating it for years and the story of its inception and significance will always remain a fascinating tale of art. While the painting itself is as interesting as its ever been, so too are the newer creations artists have been making with its theme. Using the same coloring and textured style, artists have created plenty of their own depictions of Starry Night over the years. But one series that seriously caught my attention is the one by artist Aja Kusick.
Aja decided to give Starry Night some “geeky” themes that include things like Pokemon, Doctor Who, Calvin and Hobbes, Star Trek, and many many others. Thankfully we have a whole bunch of them below:
Here’s a full description of the project
Artist Aja Kusick was inspired by an accident to create this wonderful fan art series that mashes up geek culture fandoms with expressive van Gogh’s style, especially “The Starry Night”. Everything started when an education blog mistakenly shared Aja’s painting of the Eiffel Tower as van Gogh’s. However, the Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889 and Van Gogh died in 1890, having spent his last years in the south of France, so it’s very unlikely that he even saw the iconic tower. She decided to take this further and have fun out of the situation; she asked herself “What else did Van Gogh not see?” and the “Van Gogh Never” series was born
