When ‘Wonder Woman’ was released in 2017, it became one of the most financially and critically successful films of the year. Furthermore, it was widely regarded as the crowning achievement of the DC Extended Universe. As a result of this success, Warner Bros. made the decision to concentrate their efforts on creating a sequel, so they could expand the adventures of Diana Prince. It has been reported that production of this sequel will begin over the coming months and a few details about the film have been leaked.
One piece of leaked information relates to the villain in the film. Apparently, this new character is called Cheetah. A source revealed to ‘The Hashtag Show’ that the storyline of the sequel revolves around Diana Prince in the 1980s when she is reunited with Steve Trevor. The pair will take on the Soviet Union, which has now been dissolved’ The new villain, Cheetah, will appear somewhere in this plot trying to hamper their efforts.
The source went on to reveal that actress Emma Stone was approached to play the role of Cheetah by Warner Bros., but she declined the offer. This is not the first time a character called Cheetah has appeared in the DC Universe as there have been multiple characters with this title over the years.
The version of Cheetah in ‘Wonder Woman 2′ is a British anthropologist called Barbara Ann Minerva who located the lost city of Urzkartagan while in the middle of an ancient ritual and then becomes an avatar of the cheetah god.
Last year’s ‘Wonder Woman’ film could give us a clue of the extent of involvement this villain will have in the storyline. In ‘Wonder Woman’, the focus was more on the hero helping humanity in a variety of ways and less on a battle with one specific villain. If this is a trend that the producers follow through to the sequel, then it is likely that Cheetah will be just one factor amongst several that hamper Wonder Woman’s progress.
Wonder Woman last appeared on screens in ‘Justice League’. Unlike ‘Wonder Woman’, this film was a financial and critical failure. Fans of the DC Universe are probably now hoping that the ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel will set things straight.
Gal Gadot is the actress who played Diana Prince/ Wonder Woman in last year’s film, which was directed by Patty Jenkins, and she is set to reprise this role for the sequel. Gadot told ‘Entertainment Weekly’ that there is plenty more of Wonder Woman’s story to tell. She made the point that other than the work that Lynda Carter did on the TV show, Wonder Woman’s story has not been told until the movie was released last year. Gadot feels that the character has a lot more to offer fans yet, especially as Wonder Woman has a 75-year history.
Fans of Wonder Woman will have to wait until November 1, 2019, as this is the date when it is set for release. However, if you just want a fix of the DC Extended Universe before then, ‘Aquaman’, starring Jason Momoa, is set for release on December 21, 2018.
