When we watch a movie, television show, or play a video game that involves swords we don’t give much thought to the actual swords. We just think it’s kind of cool that we’re watching or engaging in a cool sword fight. When you saw the movie Pulp Fiction and Butch reaches for the Samurai blade to take on the rednecks who were having their way with Marcellus Wallace you didn’t think much of the actual blade, where it’s from, and what it’s supposed to be used for.
However, there is definitely one thing you did think when you saw that sword: “that thing rocks,” and “this scene is going to be awesome.” Why? Because the movie set you up that way. But still, we see swords all the time in media but we don’t give much thought in analyzing them. That’s about to change.
