Today is March 14th which means that on the calendar we’re looking at 3/14. Know what that means? It’s Pi Day! If you’d like a little background on what Pi Day is, here you go.
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “Ï€”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant – the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter – which is approximately 3.14159. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.
OK so now that you know this, I wanted to share a clip from the movie Life of Pi which has absolutely nothing to do with Pi Day other than the fact the name “Pi” is used in the title. Many people consider this to be the best scene in the movie which I happen to agree with. By the way, how amazing of a movie was Life of Pi? While it didn’t win Best Picture that year, Ang Lee, the cinematography, the visual effects, and the original score did pick up Oscars awards.
Anyway, here’s the clip
