This picture has been sparking a ton of debate online, and it should. As a father of a 4-year-old boy and another son about to turn 1, I looked at this sign for a very long time and thought of my boys. Politically I would consider myself to be fiscally conservative given that I run my own business and can’t stand the thought of my taxes going to anyone who doesn’t work hard. But for most other matters I tend to lean a bit on the liberal side. And that includes guns.
I’m a firm believer in stricter gun laws to prevent psychotics from arming themselves and doing any damage to my children, or anyone’s children for that matter. At the same time, would I feel better if there were a sign like this in front my child’s school? I can’t lie. I absolutely would. Considering the tragedies we’ve seen over the past decade, I just don’t think this is such a bad thing. I know many liberals might think a sign or situation like this is moving us in the wrong direction. But what’s the alternative?
Here’s the thing. You can still have tougher gun control laws but you can also arm schools to the teeth with highly qualified and screened individuals whose only job is to protect our children. The way I see it, we spend millions and millions of dollars protecting Donald Trump, even more millions on protection of his ridiculous Trump Tower.
I’d say we can afford to offer a little more protection to our children. Again, I’m in favor of stricter gun laws but I’d also be a hell of a lot more comfortable if every person who even had an inkling of getting into my son’s school was met by an armed guard with a scary weapon.
