The country world, the world in general really, lost a legend just recently when Mel Tillis passed away at the age of 85 years old. He was known to fans as the guy that made those funny but good-natured jokes about himself on Hee Haw, and he was responsible for some of the most popular songs of the country genre. The Country Music Hall of Fame musician had his own impressive run as a singer but the songs he wrote made an even bigger contribution to the country genre than can be easily described. He was more than capable of mixing heartbreak with humor and managed to bring real life experience to his melodies in a way that people absolutely loved. As one of the greatest voices and talents in the business he’s going to be missed, but thankfully his legacy should have no trouble living on in those that remember him.
Here are a few of his greatest hits.
5. The Marty Stuart Show-Heart Over Mind
This show became famous for showcasing new and well-established talent in an effort to push forth the ever-popular country genre. It’s the type of show you don’t see that often anymore unless you know where to look and are into the style that used to be so popular. TV has changed so much since the old days when it was more about discovering and showcasing real talent.
4. Beer for My Horses-Burning Memories
It’s the kind of throwdown, cops gone renegade film you might expect but it’s a fun ride along the way. Toby Keith isn’t that bad as he plays Rack, a guy that’s devoted to his job and his friends in such a way that he can’t seem to hold a steady relationship and ends up losing his girlfriend only to find another old flame not too long after. As films go it’s not the worst.
3. Smokey and the Bandit II-Here’s Lookin’ At You
Bandit’s back again, only this time his cargo is slightly different and a lot more fragile. Plus, after splitting from Carrie he’s kind of fallen on hard times and has to be motivated once again to take on a job that only he can accomplish. Through much convincing and a lot of shenanigans he finally finds a reason to like himself again and ends up getting the girl, again.
2. The Villain-The Villain
There a few things that might make you tilt your head in confusion at this movie. One is the fact that Arnold Schwarzenegger is cast in a pretty big role, the other is that Ann Margeret’s character keeps making passes at him and he never bats an eye. It’s almost like Conan with a cowboy hat and a lot less violence. It’s still considered a classic.
1. Every Which Way But Loose-Coca-Cola Cowboy
Philo Beddoe is a guy that just wants someone to love, but goes chasing after the wrong woman. When he finally catches up with her he realizes it just a little too late. Throughout the trip he’s harangued by the law, a biker gang, and gets into all sorts of trouble. Love makes people do strange things at times.
Mel Tillis made a big impression on the country music scene and in American culture. Rest in peace sir.
