The Top Five Comic Book Show Crossovers This Season

The Arrowverse is a pretty amazing place. It’s filled with awesome characters from DC Comics made into TV shows, and they get to play together in a universe specifically designed to connect their superhero abilities in some very spectacular story lines. Things that have beguiled fans of the Arrowverse are the mysterious plot twists promised and the excitement of how things will pan out when the gang gets together.

Three top series dominate the shared universe. Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow each have their loyal fans. Each show recently completed its current season:

  • Arrow finished Season 5 on May 24, 2017.
  • The Flash finished Season 3 on May 23, 2017.
  • Legends of Tomorrow finished Season 2 on April 4, 2017.

A significant recent crossover took place last season, but it paved the way for added excitement in the current season. Here’s the story:

“World’s Finest” Supergirl, Season 1, Episode 18

This crossover was from the 2015-2016 season. It opened up the chance for future crossovers in the next season, and with other shows.

It took three years, from 2014 to 2016 for the Supergirl series to share story crossovers within the Arrowverse. The shows were on two different networks; CBS and The CW. But the fans continued to ask for a crossover, and journalists continued to write about its possibility. So the network executives and show creators came to a collaborative point. The episode “World’s Finest” includes events which intersect within both Supergirl and The Flash (“Versus Zoom”, Season 2, Episode 18). The importance of this crossover is that Supergirl was finally established in an alternate universe which The Flash can access because he has the superpower which allows him to travel between different Earths. The Flash’s secure popularity was brought into the new chemistry of Supergirl, to create a fun and different show.

The very first meeting of Supergirl and The Flash:

In the current 2016 to 2017 season, only four official crossover events took place. Since merging story lines from different shows takes a considerable amount of logistical planning, these crossovers unfolded over a series of episodes. That’s what’s happened with “Invasion!”. The story line unfolded over three events with one event taking place in each of the top shows. It’s proved to be a fan favorite which rocked the Arrowverse fandom for many reasons. Here’s what happened:

One. “Invasion!” The Flash, Season 3, Episode 8

When the Dominators, an advanced race of aliens invades The Flash’s universe, he joins together with the Legends of Tomorrow and the Green Arrow to fight against them and their highly evolved technology. Facing the collective Dominion proves to be a difficult task, as the Dominators dabble with the genetic testing which results in humans gaining super powers. The Flash adds Supergirl to the forces he amasses against the Dominators, but he must bring her from a different universe.

In The Flash show, The Dominators land their spaceship just outside of Central City. Barry realizes that he must assemble Team Arrow to prepare their combat strategy against the aliens. He collects The Legends, Thea and Supergirl from Earth-38. They train, sparring with Supergirl, who is called upon to lead a rescue attempt when the President is abducted by the Dominators. Unfortunately, the President is killed. The Dominators control the heroes with a mind control device. Barry is able to manipulate Supergirl so that she destroys the device, but team members are teleported suddenly and Barry cannot stop their disappearance.

Two. “Invasion!” Arrow, Season 5, Episode 8

In the Arrow show, Oliver, Ray, Diggle, Sara, and Thea are being held on the Dominator mothership in pods. They are unconscious. Cisco Ramon, Curtis and Felicity are using Dominator technology in an attempt to hack the alien’s mainframe. Supergirl and Flash locates and helps team members when they recover a crucial device. Because Oliver and the captives begin to see flashes of their former lives, they decide they are suffering from a collective hallucination. They are eventually rescued, but the Dominator mothership continues on its path toward the Earth.

Three. “Invasion!” Legends of Tomorrow, Season 2, Episode 7

In the Legends of Tomorrow show, Amaya, Cisco, Felicity, Mick and Nate time travel to 1951 Oregon, which is when and where the Dominators first invaded Earth. A Dominator is captured, and teaches The Legends that the alien arrival has an important purpose. The Dominators are assessing the threat level superhumans might pose. The Legends return to 2016, learning that the Dominators plan to use a bomb which will not only kill the metahumans, but also include human casualties in the millions. The bomb is destroyed and painful nanotechnology is used to cause the retreat of the Dominion. Supergirl receives a traveling device from Cisco so they can continue sharing universes.

The fourth crossover of the current season features The Flash and Supergirl facing the Music Meister in a musical show. Darren Criss portrays the Music Meister. He and former Glee co-stars Melissa Neoist and Grant Gustin, join in the episode. The Music Meister has placed Supergirl in a coma in the previous episode called “Star Crossed”. She is brought to Earth with hopes that Team Flash will be able to save her.

Four. “Dynamic Duet” The Flash, Season 3, Episode 17

In The Flash show, the comatose Supergirl arrives on Earth-1. J’onn J’onzz and Mon-El bring her and warn Flash that Music Meister has threatened to attack him also. When the Meister appears at S.T.A.R. Labs, he puts Barry into a coma. Barry awakes to find Kara/Supergirl singing Moon River in a nightclub. The Flash and Supergirl sing in the nightclub so they will not die in the real world, as warned by the Music Meister. The episode is filled with music, and strange plot twists where various characters reveal their true loves; all orchestrated by the Music Meister, who ultimately vanishes before the characters settle into their new relationships.

The music from this episode features originally composed music and a soundtrack produced on the WaterTower Music label.

The musical crossover was loads of fun, and took the Arrowverse into a style and place completely new for its characters. The three “Invasion!” crossovers stirred enormous fan response, as the epic combining of story lines reached heights never before attempted.

Yeah… these crossovers were spectacular.
