The Vampire Diaries 2.16 “The House Guest” Recap

The Vampire Diaries 2.16 “The House Guest” RecapI’ve officially run out of words to open a recap for The Vampire Diaries unless I start using expletives, which I unfortunately can’t use describe the awesomeness that was last night’s episode. In fact, I’m mentally circling how I’m going to be able to tackle the layers of goodness that was bestowed upon us tonight, especially given this episode marks the last one till April (cue the screams of torture now). With that said, I’m going to take on this recap the best way possible and try my damnedest to not leave anything out, without going overboard.

Elena and Stefan get duped by Katherine, who they just found out was released from the tomb due to Elijah’s ‘death.’ It’s unclear if Damon told Stefan beforehand of Katherine’s escape, but the fact of the matter is that Elena is pissed and doesn’t want any help that Katherine has to offer. Knowing that Elena and the Salvatore brothers aren’t thinking straight, Katherine makes the point known that she’s not going anywhere.

At school, Caroline catches up to Matt to patch things up. The subject of Tyler comes up and Caroline realizes that he left town, but Matt takes it as something else and walks off. Meanwhile, Damon tries to burn Elijah’s body to retrieve the dagger, but finds out that the slab of old vamp meat is indestructable. He asks Katherine why didn’t she tell him that he would die if he had of killed Elijah. When Katherine plays coy, Damon turns the flamethrower on her, but she talks him into pointing the nozzle elsewhere. She then reveals that she did know Damon would die, which was small price for her freedom out of the tomb.

Stefan fills Jeremy and Bonnie in on the update about Katherine and asks Bonnie to talk with the Martins face to face on even neutral turf. After he leaves, the two secret lovers share a secret kiss with Bonnie promising to tell Elena soon. Alaric talks with Elena about Jenna and keeping lies from her and reveals that he wants to come clean to protect Jenna and their relationship. Elena reluctantly asks for more time until the Klaus mess is over, but Alaric declares him and Jenna are over until that happens.

The meeting between the Martins, Stefan, and Bonnie doesn’t go to well as Jonas is not happy about Elijah being dead. Stefan asksThe Vampire Diaries 2.16 “The House Guest” Recap to help the Martins carry out their plan to kill Klaus and retrieve their loved one and that they can trust him. Back at the Salvatores, Katherine drops some more knowledge of why Elijah is looking for the burial ground for the witches who were murdered in Mystic Falls. Turns out that if a witch dies violently, their body gives of some highly powerful enegry, which mean Elijah could have sustained a good amount of power for something, but for what? Luckily, Stefan has the (most logical) answer to that question, courtesy of the Martins. Apparently, Elijah didn’t have a weapon to go against Klaus, but if he had the power of the burial ground then he really didn’t need a weapon. Now the question comes to this: where is the burial ground?

The Martins, on the other hand, well namely Jonas, has other plans. After discussing how they failed themselves in trying to find the burial ground, the two warlocks decide to resurrect Elijah since he’s the only person they can trust. Not the Salvatore. So they decide to do an astral projection spell with Luka being the spy inside the Salvatores’ house. Man, I smell tragedy…

At the Gilberts’ residence, Elena, Bonnie and Caroline have girl talk and dish about each other’s issues on top of the overall threat of death on their shoulders. Jenna joins the club with Elena and Caroline trying to subtly explain why Alaric is “lying” and how it might be for her own good. Jenna disagrees, citing that someone you care about shouldn’t be left out in the cold about something big. This rings true in the room and the girls decide to brush it of by heading to the Grill to see a live band. Let the hellraising begin…

While reading through Jonathan Gilbert’s journals, Damon and Katherine come across another little nugget of Mystic Falls history. Emily Bennett was allegedly taken from her house and burned in the same spot as her ancestors did, but there is still no clue about where that was exactly. Or is there? After Damon berates Katherine about her assistance in their cause, she leaves the room to eat, while Stefan enters and Damon gives him a book with an important passage in it. While this is going down, Luka has made his way to Elijah’s corpse, but Elena can sense him in the house and eventually spots an invisible hand trying to free the dagger out of Elijah. She struggles with Luka, who warns his father of the complications at hand. Luka thinks Katherine is Elena until Jonas tells him otherwise and orders Luka to stake Katherine. Just as Katherine thinks she’s won the tug of war on the dagger, Luka finds a stake and jams it into her! What?!?!

Then Damon appears and brandishes the flamethrower on Luka as soon as he nearly frees the dagger! Back in the Martins’ house, Luka jumps up from the table covered in flames, while Jonas frantically tries to save him. It’s too late as Luka’s ass is burnt to a crisp and Jonas howls vengeance after a spell to save Luka fails. He then takes the material needed to track Elena, but is nearly stopped by Stefan. After messing with Stefan’s head, Jonas leaves the place and heads towards the Grill for Elena.

The Vampire Diaries 2.16 “The House Guest” RecapAt the Grill, Caroline and Jenna both run into the complicated men in their lives, but it’s actually Alaric and Caroline who are harboring dark secrets from their significant others. Jenna declares to Alaric that she’s not a child and can take what he might throw at her. Not sure about that, little lady… Matt blows Caroline off until a pep talk from Bonnie and Elena, who says that their secrets are doing more harm than good with their loved ones, forces her to unexpectedly take over the Grill’s stage and belt out The Bangles’ ‘Eternal Flame’ as a ode to her and Matt. After Caroline (whose voice was AMAZING, mind you) sings her heart out, Matt runs to the stage and lays some kisses on her.

Back at the Salvatores’, Damon stabs Katherine with a stake for lying to him about the dagger. He then demands for her to come clean on some things. She does, but it’s not to Damon’s likeing. It seems that John and Isobel want the Salvatores out of Elena’s life and promised to spare Stefan’s life if Katherine stayed to help save Elena. Damon was the sacrifice in the deal, because Katherine could only save one. If you ask, you shall receive, Damon, and the truth hurts worse than a stake to the heart.

At the Grill, Bonnie comes clean to Elena about her and Jeremy. After Elena gives Bonnie her blessing on the matter, Elena gets a heads up from Stefan via phone call that Jonas is out for blood. While Elena walks off, Bonnie spots Jonas enter the Grill looking for Elena. As Bonnie tries to talk Jonas down, he get pissed and shows that he means business by cutting the power to the Grill and setting it on fire. He knocks out Bonnie and leaves her to burn. Matt luckily spots Bonnie and leads her to safety. In an attempt to call Jonas down, Elena begs for Jonas to let them help him retrieve his daughter Greta, but he sys only Elijah can do that. It’s then that Caroline attacks Jonas from the side, but gets a repelling spell put on her. As Caroline screeches in pain, Matt comes to the rescue and pins Jonas to the wall, but the warlock breaks a bottle and shoves the glass into Matt’s neck!!! What?!?!

As Matt lays bleeding to death, Caroline fights her hunger and feeds Matt her blood. Uh oh…

Back at the Gilberts’, Bonnie laments on how Luca’s death being on her hands, but Jeremy declares otherwise and thinks his former competition got what he deserved. Bonnie makes it clear that she was not happy about her actions that night and hopefullyThe Vampire Diaries 2.16 “The House Guest” Recap Jeremy will see that and not stumble back twelve steps on his growing process. Stefan and Elena then show up and after Elena goes upstairs, Stefan asks Jeremy and Bonnie how long they had been there and if they checked the house.

Elena goes to her bathroom and is promptly attacked by Jonas, who gets a surprise of his own when Elena turns out to actually be Katherine(!), who quickly rips out Jonas’s throat with her fangs and lets his body drop to the floor as Stefan and Bonnie appears. Mortified, Bonnie states that Jonas didn’t have to die, which Katherine whole heartedly disagreed with. Suddenly, Jonas jumps up and grabs Bonnie’s head, and as she’s screaming Stefan breaks Jonas’s neck to finish the job. (Clutch my pearls!!!)

After that mess is over, Katherine and Elena have a face-off after Elena acts ungrateful towards Katherine for saving her life, which is a given. But Katherine lays down the grounds of a truce for the sake of getting rid of Klaus and no feud will stop her from trying to acheive that goal. Outside the house, Jenna and Alaric talk over their relationship with Alaric remaining firm on not telling Jenna about Isobel and everything else. He does tell Jenna that he can at least say he loves her.

Jeremy fusses over Bonnie not getting her powers back since Jonas is now dead, but after shutting him up with a kiss, Bonnie reveals that she did get her powers back after all. But that’s not all. When Jonas grabbed Bonnie’s head, he didn’t only give her back her powers, but he also bestowed upon her his wishes for her to kill Klaus and the knowledge on how to do that. Bad Ass Bonnie is back!

Back at the Salvatores’, the Mystic Falls mythology lesson hasn’t stopped as Damon wonders aloud to Katherine how did The Council know about Emily Bennett’s membership with the Witches Country Club if he (Jonathan) didn’t tell anyone. Of course, it was Katherine who sold out her witch, because she was a “loose end.” Katherine then counters Damon’s question with one of her own, which is why won’t Damon reveal the location of the witches’ burial ground. She refuses to believe that Damon doesn’t know where it is since Emily was a focal point in getting Katherine out of the tomb, meaning he watched her every move and had to have known where she died. Damon doesn’t answer and tosses Katherine out of his bed as she tries to seduce him.

Matt awakes and is freaking out, but freaks out even more when Caroline reveals her true nature to him. This sends Matt back to Season One as he recalls Vicki mentioning a vampie attacking her. Matt puts two and five together and comes up with a wrong scenario as he screams at Caroline what did she do to Vicki. Dammit! Just as they were back together! Why toy with us, Plec and Williamson!!!

As Jenna and Elena share a cup of ice cream, someone rings the doorbell. Jenna goes to answer it and who happens to be on the front stoop?

Isobel.

Kill my ass now!
