The problem with dating a vampire when you’re the key to breaking a major curse is that you get no alone time, so with the suggestion of a nice romantic getaway nothing could go wrong for Elena and Stefan right?! Not quite, but this weeks episode propelled forward the conflict between vampires and werewolves, with more revelations as to Elijah’s overall master plan.
After what seemed like a break from the sun and moon curse it was again front and centre this week after Tyler’s moonstone name dropping. The curse lifting for werewolves certainly has it’s benefits as, whilst some vampires have found a solution to day walking there doesn’t appear to be a werewolf who can turn at will. It’s because of this that I’m unclear as to why certain vampires seem so concerned with breaking the curse if they can already day walk or does Klaus for some reason not have this ability? Regardless after Tyler sees a photo of Kathy (this made me laugh, I’m sure she loves being called that) the whole doppleganger business dropped in to place.
Last week there was a bit of a bloodbath and continues to be a theme when vampires and werewolves meet. First, with Damon who had already lost some blood thanks to a well positioned pencil to his throat by disgruntled Elijah, showing what happens when you don’t treat your elders with respect. Damon’s pretty neck didn’t get much time to heal before he was placed in a lovely torture device also focusing on his throat. As Damon himself pointed out, being put in that chair was pure irony considering what had happened to Mason. Though this time blood definitely got on the rug, seems werewolves seem less bothered by upholstery cleaning especially when it’s not their house. This was also the scene of some more werewolf heart ripping with Elijah continuing this trick, impressing our very own heart ripper Damon, and not to be out done Stefan showed that he is also adept at this skill at the lake house.
To the lake house which seemed like the best idea I’m sure going to a remote location but that just gave the opportunity of turning it in to a horror movie sequence. Before all that there was memories, making out, big future discussions, making out and secret rooms. The hot and heavy weekend turned in to a major buzz kill after Elena revealed that she is fully aware that she will probably die, and yep as Stefan put it, “it’s not heroic, it’s tragic.” A couple of things that occurred to me during this lake house time; the secret weapon/journal filled room sure looks like it will come in handy especially what ever those white tip bullets are and Stefan sure did look hot in her great grandfathers jacket who I’m guessing he might have known.
Perhaps my favourite scene this week was between Alaric and Damon who really are the best drinking buddies and made me realise how little these two have got to do with each other so far this season. If Alaric’s pleas to Damon to not kill Andie weren’t funny enough then his summation of Elijah really took line of the week in that he is “one scary dude but with nice hair.” What is not so great is John placing the seeds of doubt with Jenna about Alaric and his lying, is she going to find out about everything soon? Alaric really needs to keep hold of that ring that John wants back as he really does get in to a lot of death by supernatural beings situations and I’m pretty sure that Alaric over John is not a hard decision.
So to Tyler and his departure at the end of the episode which I am sure is anything but final but was sad all the same. He is at a complete loss as to who he is and what he should do and so far his actions have almost got his friends killed. Though leaving with the woman who has put his friends in harms way doesn’t seem the wisest idea, she can at least identify with his condition. With Tyler leaving for now I’m guessing this means that there will be some more vampire centric stories, including looking back to when Stefan and Damon were first vampires. Another thread that seems to be coming to the foreground is Bonnie’s capabilities as a witch, don’t think Dr Martin will take too kindly to his son being used like that. Speaking of witches it was good to see Bonnie looking beyond the fact that Jeremy is Elena’s little brother and just going for it, though I’m sure that all will not be plain sailing for these two.
Another strong outing from the show that just doesn’t slow down even when romantic getaways are thrown in to the mix.A
