The Conjuring 2 brought up the being known as Valak the Defiler, and The Nun will be bringing the character back for a kind of prequel to the character, but it’s important to note that while the creature does truly exist in the lore books it is far different in appearance from what was brought forth for The Conjuring. In fact some even think that the original form of Valak has the potential to be much, much scarier than what was given in the first place. It’s enough to say that Valak in The Conjuring 2 was creepy as all get out, but the jump scares and shock value of the creature tends to go away after seeing it more than a few times. In a darkened theater or room it does still deliver a nice little jolt, but the true form of Valak, which has many different spellings by the way, is one that might be too disturbing for viewers. It could also be criticized in a way that makes it less effective.
The true form of Valak is a winged child riding a two-headed dragon.
This seems like it would way more terrifying given that using children in horror movies in ways such as this tends to open up a whole new chapter of terror that many find absolutely bloodcurdling. It’s been well established that children are not off limits when it comes to horror, in fact they never have been it seems since their scare value is sometimes higher than that of adults. Children are after all supposed to be seen as innocents and those that are to be left alone in any type of conflict. But seeing as how Valak’s true form, as told in stories, is that of a child with wings it seems that this would be more inherently terrifying when thinking about the evil that lurks behind the seemingly innocent form. Not only would this terrify people once it was used, but it could be used to greater extent since this could make Valak much harder to spot if he chose to mingle among humans. A nun in full habit and corpse makeup is kind of hard to miss.
His power set is a lot more than what was shown in the movie.
Valak is a demon that carries great weight in hell and is actually what would be called a president. That’s an odd term for such a place as hell but it’s what has been used. He commands upwards of 30 legions and is known to be uniquely powerful as well as terrible in his rage. Imagine a demon that could command so many and yet look so unassuming, this would make for a horror film the likes of which people would swarm to most likely as it could set the stage for a battle of truly biblical proportions. Of course the figure of Valak would have to change a bit and the story would have to be something quite different, but it would at least showcase Valak’s power. Moving things around the room and spinning crosses on the wall is all well and good when it comes to terrifying people in the movies, but Valak is supposedly the type that could easily lay waste to a single family without much trouble.
The figure used in the movie was mentioned by Lorraine Warren.
She told the director of a creature she’d seen in a dark vortex at one time and the idea for a nun simply came into being. There wasn’t much else to it since the ideas for horror movies seem to come from the ether and don’t need a lot of prodding when it comes to making them absolutely terrifying. Valak’s power alone would make him one of the fiercest creatures that has ever stepped into movies but then the effects would really have to ramp up and people like the Warrens would likely stand no chance against such beasts. People are always willing to come watch stories that have a biblical lean, especially when it comes to demons and devils taking on those that belong to the Christian faith. Sometimes the subjects get a little too offensive but they make for great entertainment all the same. Horror movies don’t always have to be spot-on accurate in order to terrify the audience, they only have to be able to cause people to jump in their seats, and Valak in The Conjuring 2 has certainly done that.
It does kind of ruin the experience to learn that some of your favorite monsters are much, much different in reality, but at the same time it can make them a lot scarier as well since they might exist in a form that you would never assume or even associate with such evil. The idea of Valak is much more terrifying than what we’ve been given.
