If you’re a comic book fan then you likely already know about the What If? series that debuted a while back in the books and became one of the most interesting series of all since it asks the questions that a lot of people have considered but have never been able to escape the panels. What if things in the comics had gone so differently than they actually did? The questions and the ramifications of this have been huge since in some timelines the result of one small action not being taken or another taking the place of that desired action could create a very different outcome in the Marvel universe. What we’ve learned about the upcoming series thus far thanks to Q.V. Hough from ScreenRant is that there will be several actors from the MCU coming back to take up their roles once again to show just what might happen if certain events played out differently this time around.
The What If? series is one of the most interesting since it takes us down roads that might not seem entirely practical but are nonetheless intriguing since it does tend to make a person wonder just what the Marvel universe would have been like if just one occurrence had been different or somehow altered. For instance, in the MCU as of now you might ask what if Killmonger had really killed T’Challa instead of tossing him off the cliff, or what if Peggy carter had become Captain America, as Isaac Rouse of Hypebeast mentions, instead of Steve Rogers. There are an infinite number of questions that could be posed to the MCU when it comes to determining just how things could come out differently, but some that are bound to come up will no doubt be those that would have a very tremendous impact on how things developed. At this point though it’s only expected for this series to cover the Infinity saga since Phase 4 is still largely unknown. But if the series does well enough it does seem as though it might be able to inspire a recurring theme that will hopefully expand to include phase 4 at a later date, perhaps a few years into the future when things really start to heat up again.
For now though there are plenty of stories that can be used in order to make this series pop since if you can think about it for a moment, there are a lot of pivotal moments in which a simple action would have decided the entire fate of the MCU. From Iron Man all the way to Endgame things could have gone different in many ways that might have easily affected the outcomes of the many battles that took place. Remember in Avengers when we first thought that the battle of New York was so monumental? What if Tony had never made it back to the earthen realm? Or what if Hawkeye hadn’t been playing lookout for the rest of the group? What if Thor hadn’t regained his hammer? What if this, what if that, what if things had been altered by the death of a key hero in the beginning? Things could have gone so differently because of just one minor alteration that it’s hard to really go into how many different ways this could happen, and that’s the whole point of What If?.
There are so many great tales that go with this series that it’s hard not to think that it will be an enduring show as phase 4 begins to gain ground with many fans. Hopefully the direction this show goes in will be able to entice a good number of fans to demand more and more, and possibly even introduce other heroes and villains that could become popular in the MCU. After all, there are so many possibilities that are there for the taking when it comes to What If? that it boggles the mind and makes it easy to think that the entire Marvel notice might be put on notice by this show if things are done right and the stories are told in an intriguing manner. Given that the X-Men and Fantastic Four are making their way to the MCU eventually it’d be great to see if some of the old story lines, such as Inferno and the Evolutionary War, might be explored eventually, as both groups come with a wealth of plots and characters that could possibly be used to entertain and expand the franchise in a way that would allow it to be sustainable for a long time to come. At this point the only difficulty seems as though it would come from trying to find the right actors for the various roles that would be required, as the stories are there, just waiting to be used.
