The cult classic that is The Lost Boys was one of those movies that people, teens mostly, spoke about in excited tones when they would get to see it with or without their parents’ permission (yes, this was still a thing back then) and shortly afterward would proceed to proclaim as one of the best movies ever. Keep in mind that during this time there weren’t a whole lot of quality vampire flicks that catered to a wide audience. Also keep in mind that the nature of the vampires in this movie was something that appealed to a younger crowd since they were made up to look like punk rockers and had the kind of attitudes that were rebellious and outright dangerous, something which still draws people of a certain age to watch these movies and become entranced. Plus, the fact that it had the two Corey’s was just another point in its favor as they were still riding a rather big wave of popularity that had yet to come crashing down.
Here are five of the best songs from the soundtrack.
5. Power Play
In terms of bringing Jason Patric into the mainstream this was only his second movie and as such it seems like it should have been a bit difficult for him to contend with seasoned actors like Kiefer Sutherland, Dianne Wiest, Corey Haim and Corey Feldman among others, but he held his ground and did pretty good as the character of Michael. There were a few moments during the movie when he seemed to falter just a bit or perhaps stare off into the distance as though he lost his line, but he recovered nicely and did his absolute best, which turned out to be an integral part of the movie as it turns out.
4. Good Times
Perhaps one of the goofier but more enjoyable highlights of the movie had to be the Frog brothers. They were goofy, they were kind of insane in their own way, but they were still a kind of fun and engaging part of the movie that added a bit something more to the entire experience. The idea that two more movies were made after this is kind of depressing since one would think that this was a great attempt at something funny and chilling all at once and could be left alone. But if you take a look on Amazon or iTunes you’ll find that there are indeed two more Lost Boys movies out there that focus primarily on Corey Feldman’s character.
3. I Still Believe
This is kind of a typical formula it would seem, a young woman is noticed by a young man and the moment is simply enchanting. But it turns out that she seems to belong to someone else, or with someone else at least, and that someone else is a rather dangerous-looking type that the young man can’t seem to contend with at first. But then a friendship is formed, and a bond is created of some sort, and voila, you have a movie. Star almost seemed like she could have been left out of the movie however and it would have still been just as good, but then again she did add some sex appeal to the whole thing.
2. People are Strange
When you move from a place you know and care about to an entirely different location it can seem a bit strange since folks in different communities can seem a bit ‘off’ to someone that hasn’t been around for a long period of time. But in this movie it almost seems as though the people in this sleepy little town are beyond strange, as though they take strange to a new level and keep it comfortable since they look more like they belong in Portland, Oregon in the current era than on a small coastal town where things don’t always happen that often. But hey, it was a nice way to introduce the movie.
1. Cry Little Sister
The best song from the movie doesn’t even get a whole lot of play until the very beginning and then at various points throughout the film. It is however the one song that seems to encapsulate a lot of the feeling that goes into the movie and is the one that sticks in a lot of peoples’ minds when they think about Lost Boys. Unlike a lot of vampire movies there wasn’t a whole lot of fixation on romance, but there was a definite seductive presence that had more to do with the surrendering of one’s humanity than the actual lovey-dovey romance bit. In a way that’s what helped make the movie, the moral dilemma that Michael finds himself in eventually as he’s forced to give up more and more of what makes him human.
It’s still one of the best vampire movies ever made.
