Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles 2.17 “Ourselves Alone” Recap

And now we get the throwing-awayest of throw-away scenes. It’s just Riley trying to not be at the Connors by getting her stitches checked. The nurse walks in, tells her to keep taking the antibiotics, and tells Riley to leave. It probably took longer to type that out than to watch the scene.

Back at la casa de Connor, Cameron walks in to find John looking up restaurants online. Helpfully she asks if he’s hungry and he says “yes,” but that’s not why he’s looking stuff up. Derek needs the info because the lawyer he’s investigating has a table reserved there that night. Trying to be helpful, she notes that the restaurant is a bad place to dispose of a body but John says that it’s probably not going to be necessary. Disagreeing, she turns to leave. Why? To make John a sandwich. Why? Well, Cameron’s motivations are getting murkier by the minute in this episode, so let’s just leave it at, shall we?

Continuing this strange collection of really awkward scenes int he middle of an otherwise excellent episode, Derek’s at the restaurant, watching the lawyer, getting hit on by a bar-based…prostitute? Who happens to have had a ‘drink’with Derek’s target? In front of his bodyguards? That is one of the weirdest ways I’ve ever seen a character find out his target goes EVERYWHERE with his guards, and the look on Brian Austin Green’s face makes me wonder if he doesn’t agree with me.

Back at the house, Sarah’s about to put the smackdown on John for telling Riley about, well, everything, really. ‘From a stranger’s lips to my ears, John.’According to ‘Miss Wilson’Riley’s been talking about Mexico. Her foster father thinks John’s the reason Riley tried to kill herself after having her breakdown about bleached skulls and the end of the world. John’s aghast, swearing that a) Riley would never talk about Mexico, and besides — she wasn’t there for the finale, what could she possibly know? And b) he never, NEVER told her about Judgment Day. Sarah doesn’t believe him, but reminds him that she’s not the one that John has to worry about. He has to prepare himself for ‘what’s gonna happen when Cameron finds out.’

Speak of the Devil. We cut to the next scene, Cameron walking through the kitchen. Desperately looking for an out — or at the very least an explanation for why Cameron doesn’t already know about Riley, John stops her and asks if it’s possible that future John kept secrets from her. She says she’s sure he did. But it won’t help. She’s broken and there’s a big dark hole, just waiting.

Riley arrives and Sarah opens the door, stone-faced. She immediately launches into her accusations and tells Riley that they’re owed an explanation for the trust she’s betrayed. Understandably, Riley is very, very confused. John arrives and Sarah leaves so John can follow her act, telling Riley that people know things, strangers know things, true things. And as the lady doth protest too much, Cameron arrives to add her menacing stare to the mix. With all her danger instincts firing on full, Riley asks to go somewhere more private, but there’s a knock on the door. Everyone kinda scratches their heads for awhile. Eventually, Sarah, gun at the ready, goes to the door.

Cameron ushers Riley out the back door, and Sarah and John open it. Because Sarah needs one more damn thing to worry about this episode, it’s the Department of Child and Family Services, here to have a chat about Riley. Only it’s really not about her and everyone knows it.
