Supernatural 7.22 Recap: Blood, Monsters and Double-Crosses…Just Another Friday Night

Supernatural - There Will Be BloodThe Alpha Rules

The Winchesters quickly made their way into the Alpha’s mansion, only to be captured and brought before the big man himself. They tried to convince him that it was in his best interest to give up his blood so they could defeat the Leviathans. Unfortunately, it turns out that the Alpha was actually in league with the Leviathans, having met with Dick Roman, who made all kinds of promises. When Edgar showed up, the Alpha locked the boys up in order to get Edgar’s side of the story.

Edgar tried all sorts of empty promises, at least until the Alpha pushed hard enough and he finally revealed that the special Leviathan additive was killing vampires…and anything else that feasted on humans. This way, the Leviathans were the only ones left to enjoy the tasty people. Sam and Dean managed to escape their make-shift prison and beheaded Edgar. As a thank you, the Alpha gave them both his blood. And a rather nice send-off: “see you next season.” That’s one promise I hope he keeps.

Dick Roman, Master Negotiator

After being kidnapped by Edgar in the previous episode, Kevin was delivered to Dick, who threatened his mother’s life to convince the new prophet to fully decide the tablet for him. Kevin grudgingly agreed and, when finished, his mother was set free. But Dick now knows the Winchesters’ plan. His next action was to summon Crowley, right under a giant Devil’s Trap. It looks like Crowley won’t be able to get his blood to Sam and Dean anytime soon.

Is Bobby the Enemy?

My primary concern with the Winchester’s plan isn’t necessarily their ability to defeat the Leviathans, but how they will handle Bobby. Defeating the monsters is all well and good, but I’ve always found their personal dilemmas to be far more interesting. The boys have always struggled when faced with the possibility of having to defeat or stop someone they love. It really began in season 2, when Dean had to face the possibility of killing Sam if he went evil. That cycle repeated later in seasons 4 and 5 of Supernatural. At the end of season 6, the brothers were faced with having to stop their friend, Castiel.

Bobby is a serious threat. If he were any other ghost, they would put him down, but they’re conflicted. And they should be. It’s one thing to watch your father figure die from a gunshot wound and another to kill his ghost because he’s going vengeful. Especially when this isn’t really Bobby’s fault. Castiel made his choice to go dark side, but Bobby is, technically, innocent. He didn’t choose to be killed and he didn’t really choose to become an angry ghost, it’s just the natural progression of things.

I don’t know how to solve the Bobby problem on Supernatural. Now that he’s back, I don’t want him to disappear when the fighting is done. But he can’t exist indefinitely as a ghost. The only real solution – for me – would be for him to be brought back to life. It will keep him around and solve the vengeance problem.

Supernatural - There Will Be BloodThe End Game

It’s my hope that Sam and Dean defeat the Leviathans by the end of the season, instead of leaving their fate as a cliffhanger. I like the Leviathans (and Dick Roman, in particular), but with new showrunner Jeremy Carver coming in, I’m actually eager to see his vision for the show come to life and I feel like that vision would involve a new big bad for the show. I do, admittedly, have a few issues about the Leviathans that I plan on getting into in a review for the entire season of Supernatural that me and several other reviewers around the web will be contributing to (it will go up on the Monday after the finale). Stay tuned for that.

I’m reminded now of the season 5 finale, when the boys had to gather all of the necessary ingredients (in that case, the rings of the Horsemen) to defeat the villain. Unlike in that case, I’m hoping that the key to defeating the Leviathans doesn’t include any sort of personal sacrifice.

In next week’s Supernatural finale, Sam and Dean are reunited with Bobby, Castiel, Kevin and Meg to storm Sucrocorp and defeat Dick and the Leviathans. Watch a preview here.
