I can understand why some people may have felt frustrated with the fifth season of Supernatural. In many ways, it was uneven. They went from dealing with a huge apocalypse to monster-of-the week cases. It was obviously very difficult to do an apocalypse on their budget. That being said, season 5 brought us some absolutely fantastic episodes, including ‘The End’, ‘Changing Channels’, ‘Abandon All Hope’, ‘My Bloody Valentine’, ‘Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid’, and the best scene over pizza at the end of ‘Two Minutes to Midnight’. While I consider season 4 to be my favorite season because of the sum of it parts, I think that we can all still acknowledge that the fifth season may contain individually fantastic episodes, as opposed to a more cohesive overall season.
That being said, this is Supernatural. So, no matter what, I still love it. Titan Books has recently released ‘Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 5’by Nicholas Knight. This is the fifth season guide that I’ve read and, as a fan of the show, I always find them enjoyable. They add fun little behind-the-scenes tidbits and additional depth to the show. In case you’re not familiar with the Supernatural season guides, each episode is briefly summarized, and then actors, guest stars, producers, writers and set personnel provide background information on each episode. The book is full of information on how they set up certain stunts, how they made the big injuries look realistic with makeup, the pranks Jared and Jensen play on set, and much, much more.
As an added bonus, Dean’s full suicide note from the 100th episode, ‘Point of No Return’, is included. I know fans, like myself, were squinting to see exactly what he was writing during the episode. Those of you still in the dark will find it here. I won’t spoil it for you, but he left messages for both Bobby and Sam, and even threw in a little Back to the Future reference.
Both Eric Kripke and Sera Gamble provide introductions to the book, explaining their goals for the overall season and how they felt about its outcome. Individual character studies are also included at the end of the book, including looks at more secondary characters like Meg, Crowley and Gabriel (a.k.a. The Trickster). If you’re a fan of Supernatural, then you should get this book to enhance your enjoyment of the show. If you’re not already a fan, you should pick it up anyways to fill in some blanks.
Don’t forget to catch a new episode of Supernatural on Friday, November 5. You can view sneak peeks (here and here), a trailer and promo photos for the episode.
