This week’s episode of Supergirl was another solid episode, as Kara continued to grow as a hero when having to deal with a bomber from Lord Technologies. Meanwhile, James dealt with his ex-girlfriend, Lucy Lane, and through her, we learned more about James’s life in Metropolis.
It’s difficult to be critical with this episode, which was supposed to have aired last Monday instead of “Livewire. Due to “How Does She Do It?” featuring a storyline involving bombings, CBS decided to push the episode back a week out of respect to the victims of the Paris attacks. There are a lot of notable story elements that are out of sync because of the episode shuffle. For example, last week, we saw James and Lucy back together and going on a trip together, while this week, we saw them having those struggles from the moment Lucy showed up at CatCo in Episode 3. Personally, it wasn’t too hard to follow up with the out-of-sync stories, and at least we got an explanation as to how they got from point A this week to point B in last week’s story.
This week’s Supergirl also provided us with a bigger taste of Maxwell Lord, and the only thing that I took away from his role in the episode was all his scenes with Alex. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but it felt like they were hinting at a romance of sorts between the two of them. While Maxwell is an enjoyable jerk, it looks like that he will serve a Lex-Luthor type of role for Kara and that last scene they had together reminded me so much of the Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman pilot, where Superman informs Lex that he is keeping an eye on him. I guess it’s a good thing that Kara has a human antagonist while also dealing alien villians as well.
One of the greatest aspects with the episode was Kara having to take care of Cat’s son Carter, who was all sorts of awesome as he was a big fan of the Girl of Steel. The impact that both Kara and Supergirl had on Carter was far more interesting than the actual bombing plot, even though it was an important one. I just loved the heck out of the scene when Supergirl assures Carter that, while there was danger onboard the train, everything would be okay. I love that Kara is, week by week, gaining more confidence as a hero in a realistic manner; it doesn’t feel like they are rushing or slowing the pace of her evolution.
Last, but not the least, Hank’s red eyes may not be so secretive anymore as a dazed and confused Kara saw them while she was recovering from stopping one of the bombs. It is really tough to not go to the Martian Manhunter theory every time we see Hank’s eyes. Even though we saw that he has super-strength, which could be a hint towards the Cyborg Superman path, it still feels like we are getting something completely different.
Supergirl airs Mondays at 8/7c on CBS.
