Today is the today that Republicans will meet on the House Floor to vote on repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act. In an effort to rebrand Trump’s healthcare plan Republicans have been using the term “Three Bucket Strategy” referring to a three step process it would take to completely overhaul our health care system. The first bucket is to pass Trump’s American Healthcare Act. Bucket two is administrative changes at the discretion of the Department of Health and Human Services. The final bucket is comprised of standalone bills to make additional market reforms.
There are a number of skeptics to this plan including Republican Senator Ted Cruz who calls bucket three the “sucker’s bucket.” Chuck Schumer stated “We think this bill is so bad, there is no way to make it better, particularly compared to the good job that ACA is doing.”
Another skeptic to this plan is Stephen Colbert who took to the late show to dissect the Three Bucket Strategy. The minute the Late Show host brought it up the crowd started to boo and Colbert responded by saying the replacement plan has a preexisting condition, “everyone hates it.” That got the crowd going a little bit. Colbert’s biggest dig on the three bucket strategy is when he said, “with all of those buckets, think of how much you’ll save on urns.” Obviously Colbert was pulling no punches in his opening monologue.
