Stephen Colbert always makes sure to cover the biggest and latest topics in culture on The Late Show, no matter whether he’s talking about entertainment, politics, or, in this case, sports. During last night’s Late Show, Colbert took some time to celebrate Iceland’s win over England in the Euro Cup tournament, which he called “the worst thing to happen to in England in four days.”
Iceland’s victory over England has become a huge story for many reasons, with the most obvious one being that no one would have ever predicted that a small, underdog team like Iceland would beat the highly competitive English soccer team. But what’s really grabbing everyone’s attention is the Icelandic announcer and the excitement he showed during the final moments of the team’s match against England. The joy and enthusiasm in the commentator’s voice is unparalleled, but it’s even better when you know exactly what he said, which is why Colbert translated his match-ending comments.
“This is done,” Colbert translated. “This is done. We are never going home. Did you see that? Did you see that? Amazing. I can’t believe it. This is a dream. Never wake me from this amazing dream. Live the way you want, England. Iceland is going to play France on Sunday. France/Iceland. You can go home. You can go out of Europe. You can go wherever the hell you want.”
