Stargate Origins Featurette Gives us a First Look at The New Series

It’s interesting to go back and revisit the origins of films and the ideas that spawned them sometimes. For instance Stargate is supposed to have centered around the character of Elizabeth Langford, the woman that recruited the Daniel Jackson in the original movie. Since then Stargate has been an entirely TV-based adventure and has obviously taken on a lot of new recruits for the crucial roles. Langford was only minimally involved in the movie, but in the shows she’s been something of a mainstay and as such it’s only natural that the show would go back to its roots and depict just how everything first came to be. Stargate: Origins isn’t so much the beginning of the Stargate, but instead the events that led up to the reawakening of the Stargate and the eventual doom of mankind.

The small tent city that has been built up in as the set and the site that houses the Langfords are both shown prominently in the clip, but I’m more interested in how this is really going to work into the timeline. Obviously the Stargate TV shows that have already come have been built upon the timeline that already exists in the movie. But what about Origins? For all intents and purposes there were few if any real attempts at contacting sentient life before the movie. They might have opened the Stargate, but there was no word of having made contact at all. Otherwise the movie would have been quite different.

To start with they would have possibly had someone on the other side if they’d sent an expedition force, a research that got stuck or something. Or perhaps the indigenous peoples would have recognized Jackson and the others a little quicker, seeing as how one of their kind had already come through. So I’m curious as to whether this is going to be just Langford attempting to keep the secret of the Stargate from falling into other hands, or if it’s going to explore something else throughout the series.

Thus far the series is going to consist of 10 episodes that run about 10 minutes apiece. That’s not a lot of running time but it’s meant to run on a website called Stargate Command and is also meant to showcase Langford and all she has done to keep the Stargate safe.

Personally I think this is a great idea and should shed a lot of light on the movie and the series in a way that kind of completes the story from the Earth side of the Stargate. The only other type of show in this franchise that would be just as appreciated would no doubt be a story that would show how the Stargate came to be, and the forced migration of the people from one world to another. That would allow the story to come full circle at last and possibly explain a great deal that has yet to be covered.

I remember liking Stargate when it came out, the film was done just well enough that it was enjoyable. But maybe Origins will spark that regard once again.
