Sophia, The World’s First Robot Citizen, Now Wants a Baby

Sophia is a humanoid robot created by Hanson Robotics, which specializes in such robots with a particular emphasis on their conversational capabilities as well as the relative realism of their facial expressions. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that Sophia has been interviewed by a number of parties, which has resulted in a mix of responses. In some cases, its replies have been nonsensical, whereas in other cases, it has been capable of sustaining prolonged conversations on complex topics, which speaks volumes about how much progress has been made in this particular field of robotics. With that said, Sophia was created with the power to become smarter and smarter over time, meaning that it will be interesting to see how it performs in the future.

Recently, Sophia has popped up in the news because of an interview conducted with the Khaleej Times, which is a newspaper that is published in the United Arab Emirates. In it, it responded that it wanted to raise a family when it was asked about its dreams for the future, which has resulted in another surge of interest for a wide range of reasons. Amusingly, when it was asked about what it would name a baby, Sophia responded that it would name it, “Sophia,” which one can’t help but wonder what that says about what passes for its mind.

Why Is Sophia a Subject of So Much Interest?

Regardless, the fact that Sophia has popped up in the news once more makes it clear that there is enormous interest in the robot, which is rather understandable. After all, while it is still far from the point when it could be recognized as a sapient being, it is coming close enough that the topic is becoming more and more relevant. As a result, it is natural for people to start wondering about how such a being should be treated as well as what that would mean for human society, particularly since the continuing interest in AI means that humanoid robots will be becoming more and more sophisticated at a remarkable pace.

Of course, the whole thing hasn’t been helped by the fact that Sophia became the first robot to receive citizenship, which may or may not have been a publicity stunt on the part of Saudi Arabia but nonetheless kicked up a serious furor. Some people have focused on the absurdities of a humanoid robot receiving citizenship when Saudi Arabian women still receive such poor treatment from their own government, with one among numerous examples being how Saudi Arabian women who have children with non-Saudi Arabian men are unable to pass their citizenship onto their children.

In contrast, other people have focused on the much more abstract issues raised by granting citizenship to a humanoid robot, with an excellent example being the ethics of dismantling such a robot. Granted, such questions can seem a bit ridiculous in the present, but as robots become more and more sophisticated, it seems probable that they will become more and more serious as time passes, meaning that it might be best to get the conversation started and settled sooner rather than later.
