Mike Sprague from MovieWeb is excited about the prospect of another Simpsons movie and it would seem that a lot of other people are too, but at this point I think I’ll be holding my opinion largely because it would seem that it’s bound to be another cash grab by Disney that’s going to attempt something that might not pan out the way that people think it will. People would be right to say that this sounds pretty cynical since it’s hard not to like the Simpsons considering that they’ve been one of the most fun animated families for longer than many people can remember and were a popular show when a lot of us were still kids. But throughout the years the continuity of the show and the antics that they continue to be given seem to be stretching further and further as the creators continue to meet one demand after another. And after hearing how the first movie taxed them in such a humongous way it’s easy to think that a second movie might do the same even if they had extra help. It might still go off without a hitch and there’s nothing to suggest that it won’t since Disney is the kind of powerhouse that can pump funds into a project as it’s needed, but right now it feels more like one of the constant demands rather than something born out of pure desire put forth by the fans.
Of course back in 2007 the first Simpsons movie seemed like it was way overdue and should have happened earlier, but then again this was the pre-Disney owned era and the creators were doing what they could to simply keep it on the rails and keep their pretty solid fan base. The Simpsons have had their share of ups and downs throughout the years but quite honestly they’ve always been a rather solid show that doesn’t seem to be in danger of going anywhere. Another movie though, which does seem like it will happen no matter what anyone says, seems as though it could be a fast track to the kind of over-saturation that has all but killed other franchises. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe I’m being cynical for no good reason, but at this point I can’t help but think that Disney is simply pushing too much and is trying to bring forth everything they possibly can in an attempt to get their money’s worth and create the kind of buzz that will be so all-consuming that people will either find themselves lost in it or wanting to back out quickly so as not to be overwhelmed.
One thing many people should be able to admit about Disney is that they’ve taken over the movie and TV industry in a big way. It’s not a negative thing to be honest since there seems to be a lot more chance of seeing the shows and the movies that we’ve been wanting for a while, and will see that the representation will be far more accurate, we hope, than ever before. So far though Disney seems to be running an epic hit and possible miss campaign that’s only offset by the fact that they’re throwing so much at the audience that it almost feels as though they’re attempting to simply bombard people with so many options that they won’t notice if a few of these films and shows bomb out and force them to return to the drawing board. With the Simpsons it does kind of feel as though they’re attempting to bolster the franchise once again, but might end up creating something that’s not overly beneficial or harmful to the show overall. Think of it this way, the Simpsons have been thriving for so long that the first movie was kind of a giant flash in the pan that was sustained for a while thanks to certain promotions, but was easily put aside once again as the show continued to roll. It feels as though this will happen with the second movie as well, though with the inclusion of more ideas that could possibly come from Disney’s massive stable it does seem as though the movie could possibly be overplayed in a way as they attempt to throw everything but the kitchen sink at the viewers. It could possibly be a fun movie without any doubt, but at this point it seems to be more of an idea than anything.
When we’ll see the movie is uncertain since at this moment fans are all in for the idea, as people want to see the biggest, newest thing on the market before they watch it, comment on it, and then push it aside to focus on the next big thing in line. Yes, that is cynical, but it’s also quite true.
