It isn’t very often that you’ll see politicians reference movies, television or music when it comes to the explanations of pervasive issues facing America, but when they do it’s usually memorable. Remember the guy who got sworn in as Captain America? So when California senator Kamala Harris decided to use the movie Logan to reference the future of America’s job market I knew it’d be something worth posting on this website.
Harris is the second African American women ever elected to senate, is a huge proponent of using some major expletives and she just so happens to be an X-Men fan. When she was asked recently about the future of the American job market during a live taping of Crooked Media’s Pod Save America, she saw an opportunity to use Logan as a teachable moment.
“If you look closely [in Logan], you will notice that there are a bunch of trucks on the freeway and none of them have a cab,” Harris said of one of the movie’s car chase scenes. “[The movie] takes place in like 2029 and so it’s just that. Driverless cars. That is truth.”
She then continued
It’s going to happen and there are people who’ve had jobs for generations around driving a car or a truck that in some relatively short period of time won’t have those jobs anymore. What we have to do in terms of the economic message is to one, speak the truth, and then two, have a plan for transitioning them into the jobs that will be there.
Pretty accurate and perceptive reference if you ask me. Nicely done Senator!
