A sex farce cum fairy tale, ‘Anora’ delves into the gritty lives of sex workers, portraying strippers and escorts (some of whom are played by real-life professionals). Variety noted that the film makes Pretty Woman look like a Disney movie.

This release marks the culmination of a long-term relationship between Neon and Baker. Despite losing distribution rights to some of Baker’s previous works like The Florida Project to A24, Neon snagged the opportunity this time around. Tom Quinn, Neon’s chief, expressed his awe, saying I’m sort of in shock about it because it defies the laws of physics.

Beyond its sparkle during award season, Anora’s commercial potential mirrors that of past American independent cinema successes that also debuted at Cannes.
