This may be Raven’s Home, but once there was a dad in the picture, and he’s a familiar face to Disney Channel viewers. If you’ve been watching for all of the latest news on the That’s So Raven spinoff, you knew who was coming when the role of Raven’s ex-husband was first mentioned. Booker and Nia’s father is none other than Devon, Raven’s first love. His first appearance on the show gives us a little more insight into the family dynamic, why Raven is going to be raising her kids with Chelsea, and just how much those kids are like their parents.
Two adults and three kids living in a cramped apartment can get a little uncomfortable. Nia feels the brunt of that considering she is sleeping on the pull-out couch and the bookcase is her closet. Nia struggles to tell her mother how she feels, which I’ll admit is difficult when Raven is playing with Nia’s training bras. It’s a parent’s job to embarrass their children kids, so just get used to it. Meanwhile Booker has a vision of Levi talking about moving, and automatically assumes he’s about to lose his surrogate little brother. Booker proves just how much he is like his mother by trying to keep Levi from leaving by purchasing a 15 foot wide trampoline for the room. Because that won’t cause a kid’s head to go right through the ceiling.
Yet again, Raven dons her best waitress disguise to spy on Nia. Like mother, like son. Booker joins her his mom on her mission since it’s nice to have a sidekick under five feet. He can hide more easily under tables. A side effect of that is breaking en expensive coffee machine at a restaurant, but that happens everyday. Both Raven and Booker are heartbroken to overhear Nia ask Devon if she can live with him, only to be doubly blindsided when Devon announces he just got a full time weatherman position in Dallas. Nia will obviously stay with Raven, but that doesn’t solve the issue at hand. Aside from the standard privacy needs a bedroom provides, Nia is the only pre-adolescent girl in the house. She needs her own space to be able to go through all puberty entails without everyone in the apartment in her business.
Within seconds of Raven promising Nia they’ll find a solution, Chelsea shows Nia her new, redecorated room which Chelsea graciously gave up. Nia gets her own room, Chelsea and Raven get to share bunk beds, and Levi gets to sleep in a bed instead of a trampoline once Chelsea returns the massive contraption. Raven’s mothering is really fun to watch, especially considering all of the stuff she pulled in her day. It balances out the moments when Chelsea is lost. Together they make an amazing duo. Raven sums it up best when she tells Chelsea “You may not be great at housework, but this house wouldn’t work without you.” Two mothers are better than one.
How was it seeing Devon again after all these years? Will he be sorely missed, or are Chelsea and Raven the best choice parents?
