Quincy Jones is easily one of the most iconic figures in music that has ever come along. His career has literally spanned decades and throughout that time, he has gained a great deal of respect from most individuals. Perhaps because of his success, many people have dreamed of working with him and still more seem to hang on his every word. Today, this record producer that has been nominated for a whopping 79 Grammy Awards is 84 years old. It seems like age has brought him some type of candor that allows him to speak his mind without being fearful of what other people might think. As such, he has recently been making some statements about other musicians that have got a lot of people talking.
Remember, this is an individual that has worked with the likes of The Beatles and Michael Jackson, among many of the other most notable musicians in history. These are the people that are so deeply admired by fans that they are put on a pedestal, almost as if they are incapable of doing anything wrong. Jones, however, knows them on a more personal level and it seems like he isn’t afraid to say what he thinks about them, whether that pertains to their musical ability or the type of person they are on a daily basis.
It wasn’t too long ago that Jones was asked some questions about The Beatles and his answer surprised a lot of fans. He talked of Ringo Starr’s inability to play a drum session without getting confused, not to mention Paul McCartney’s lack of talent on bass. In fact, he called them “the worst musicians in the world.” Obviously, this is something that shocked a lot of fans, especially when you consider the fact that The Beatles are often considered by many to be among the most influential musicians that have ever existed, spanning both decades and countries.
He also had plenty to say about Michael Jackson, someone that many people still consider to be among the most gifted musicians to ever come along. It might hurt a lot of fans to hear him say it, but according to Jones, he was “greedy” and he had a habit of stealing material from other musicians. Jones also says that he didn’t especially like the idea of giving credit to those individuals who had collaborated with him on a project, often using their talents and then refusing to pay them a cut of the profits when it was time to do so.
A lot of these comments are probably shocking to most fans, especially for people that have long considered The Beatles to be musicians of exceptional talent, as well as for those that have always maintained that Michael Jackson was not only a great musician, but a wonderful human being. The truth is, everyone has strengths and weaknesses, as there isn’t a person alive that is even close to being perfect. Perhaps Quincy Jones is merely reflecting the flaws that he saw in the people with which he worked on a routine basis.
