Last week’s episode of Preacher was much more of a slow burn than the premiere, but it was still an absolute blast that left you wanting more. Let’s take a look at what happened in this week’s new episode of the show, “The Possibilities.”
The episode opens cold with Tulip in the middle of a conversation about the map that she retrieved. In return for the map, Tulip is given an address that should lead her to the retribution she seeks for what happened between her and Jesse in the past. The map then makes its way to a mysterious figure as Tulip heads back to Jesse with an offer for revenge (as well as giving the audience a great little flashback that shows us Jesse’s comic-accurate longer hair).
After two weeks with little information, we finally get real confirmation that Fiore and DeBlanc (the two strangers in town who, interestingly, survived their encounter with Cassidy) are here to capture the being inside of Jesse (named Genesis). Their plot receives some major progression, though, through a conversation that they have with Cassidy toward the end of the episode. Their role as the antagonists is much more vague, though, than that of Jackie Earle Haley’s Odin Quinncannon. Even in just a few scenes, Odin is an absolutely terrifying presence, and it’s easy to see why Haley was chosen for the role. He is as menacing as he is ominous, and I feel Quinncannon will be a worthy challenger to our heroes. I also love the fact that Donny is so misused by him because it may explain a bit about why the character acts the way that he does (in part, at least).
The aspect of Preacher that receives the largest focus in “The Possibilities” is the new power that Genesis has given Jesse. Early on, we see a strong example of it as the bus driver Jesse “spoke” to last week has completely forgotten the little girl he was ordered to forget. The pilot ended with our first look at this power, but the bus driver’s story allows us to see that it definitely has a long-term effect on an individual. This week, our preacher shows his new ability to Cassidy, and they begin exploring what it really means. My favorite part of this story is a funny sequence around the middle of the episode in which Jesse tests out the extent of the power on Cassidy himself. There’s also a great scene with Donny that, like the conclusion of the first episode did, shows just how dark this ability can make the show.
The real highlight of Preacher continues to be Ruth Negga’s performance as Tulip. It absolutely blows be away each and every week at how perfectly Negga is able to capture this character, and I feel like she’s going to earn major recognition come award season.
I want to briefly mention how perfect the new title sequence for Preacher is. The sequence is short, but it perfectly captures the essence of the show. I also really appreciate the fact that an actual title sequence is used in place of the typical title card, but that’s probably more a personal preference than anything else.
The first two episodes of Preacher were fun as hell, but they also asked way more questions than it seemed they intended to answer. “The Possibilities” began offering a method for all of the madness, that that’s definitely to the show’s benefit. The episode was still a slower burn than the pilot, but, as with last week, the plot progressed well all across the board, and we got more than enough great character moments to make up for just about anything.
