When you live in the United States, get up and go to work, come home to spend some time with your kids, go to sleep and do it all again the next day, it’s rare that you’ll pay attention to too much outside of your own life let alone your own country. Luckily (or not luckily) I happen to sit in front of a computer all day so when World News hits us here in the states, if it’s interesting I’ll certainly read it. Obviously when it can relate TV, even better. For those of you who don’t know what’s going on in Venezuela right now this is a very brief synopsis.
Years of mismanagement have left the country’s oil-export-dependent economy in a shambles. To appease the angry poor, President Nicolás Maduro announced a 60% increase in the minimum wage on May 1. That won’t reverse the decline of a country where production is in free fall, inflation is in the triple digits and hunger is now a common problem. It’s hard to find time for work while standing in line for the few remaining staples most of the public can afford. The latest protests, and government response to them, have pushed Venezuela closer to the brink of collapse.
Speaking of protests, rioting, and violence the picture above is one example of such chaos. If it were for the officer outfits and the concrete road this could be straight out of Game of Thrones or Braveheart. It’s crazy to think that it’s 2017 and this is the scene in some foreign lands. Pretty chilling if you ask me.
