Anyone who watched this week’s episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia would agree that making an episode like “Being Frank” was a big risk. In a recent behind the scenes video, one of the creators and stars of the show, Glenn Howerton, gave some insight into their thought process on trying such new and innovative ideas. Each year they like to do a few big episodes, understanding that sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t.
“We’re always going to be our harshest critics,” he said. “I don’t think we pull it off always but it’s always really satisfying when we do.”
The fact that they’re willing to take those big swings is what has made It’s Always Sunny one of the best comedies on television. While of course there are instances in which they don’t pull it off, even those episodes are still highly commendable because this show is willing to try things that no other show will. Taking risks also means that some people are going to respond better than others to a particular episode. I may not have loved “Being Frank” but there are others who’d rank it as one of their favorite episodes. So overall, they can never truly fail with swinging big.
Of course. those big swings have also led to some of the best episodes of the series, no matter who you ask. Between “The Nightman Cometh” and “Charlie Work,” both very different episodes for the show, they’ve managed to make some hits by not being afraid to do anything.
Howerton further explained “That’s the only way to keep it interesting, I think for us and for the audience.” There’s no doubt that keeping it interesting is exactly what the show is doing. As they take more risks this season, with promises of a cruise ship episode coming up, I’m sure we’ll continue to be impressed with what these guys can pull off.
