When you hear his voice or see him coming the first thing a lot of people would think is “Oh man, here comes Gilbert Gottfried”. It could denote excitement or it could mean that a person wants to get out of there before the guy can open his mouth, because in all honesty when Gilbert speaks he’s loud, obnoxious, and extremely coarse in what he says. But the documentary that’s set to come out about him soon is going to show another side of him that a lot of people might not believe is possible.
Think back to Problem Child 1 and 2, to Iago from the Aladdin movies, and even his standup routines. He’s always been seen as the loudmouth that just said whatever came to mind and didn’t bother with a filter. That’s been part of his greatness for a while though, that and the fact that he is somehow, accidentally funny it would seem. His humor tends to lean more towards adult themes that even some adults find offensive, but in terms of comedy he’s usually been good for a laugh.
What’s surprising is that off screen he’s a completely different guy. He’s not loud, he’s not crass, and he’s a family man with a very gentle nature that is quite the opposite of his onscreen persona. Gilbert has been around and interacted with so many different individuals that there’s not a lot of people that don’t know who he is and what he’s all about. And all of them agree that when he’s not being his loud and obnoxious self he’s actually very down to earth and even quiet. I know, quiet is not a word you would generally assume that Gilbert Gottfried would be associated with, but it’s true.
He’s actually been reviled by fans in the past mostly for his voice and the kind of comedy he enjoys bringing to the stage but the real Gilbert is a guy that’s a very smart individual and knows how to work a crowd. If people like him then he’s done his job, if they don’t like him then he’s still done his job. He tends to focus more on the reaction of the crowd than the size and plays to his strengths as much as he can. For a guy that didn’t finish high school he’s come a long way, and has learned with every step he takes just what it means to be a decent human being in private and a loud, obnoxious comedian in public.
You don’t have to like him, but the fact remains that Gottfried is one of the most well known comics of a generation and his comedy has been persistent since his arrival to the big time. He’s never been shy with what he has to say onscreen and has mange to keep his personal life well away from his comedy most times. His comedy is definitely obnoxious, but that persona has been around for so long that people have simply gotten used to it, and to him.
