Why Is It That We Never Saw a District 9 Sequel?

In my humble opinion District 9 was one of the best if not THE best movies about aliens.   I think of any movie depicting the co-existence of aliens and humans this movie captured it the most realistically.  And using the documentary style format was a stroke of brilliance.   There’s everything to like about this film from the acting to the story to the racial bias that aliens received.  It’s an incredible statement about society as a whole and reminds you very much of apartheid that went on in Africa.   If there truly was an alien invasion I’m sad to say our country would likely try to contain them by locking them up first rather than try to peacefully co-exist.  District 9 made no bones about that point of view.

Given how great a film it was and the fact that our main character does in fact survive (as a human who morphed into an alien) why wasn’t there a sequel?  Before that’s answered let me just say I’m glad there wasn’t a sequel.  It’ll be nice to view District 9 the way it is: an incredible movie I can look back on and reminisce about.  I can form my own opinions about what may or may not have happened.  But if you’re looking for a clearer answer on why no sequel was made, Looper made this video to explain it.  Remember, the movie was made for $30 million and grossed $210 million.  That screams sequel all the way.  But alas, it hasn’t happened yet.
