Watching Natalie Portman bust such an awesome rap on TV, with a Jar Jar cameo no less, is something that might drive a lot of people to wonder just what she was thinking. In the current societal trends this would no doubt enrage some people but overall I thought it was pretty funny. Yeah it goes into some rather uncomfortable territory for some folks but guess what, that’s comedy. If a person’s offended it by they don’t have to watch, but I’m guessing plenty of people have already gone on to state what they think about and possibly condemn it. That won’t be happening here, I thought she was on the money and funny as all hell.
Portman has been an opinionated person since she was young and has not stopped as she’s grown older. Her views on social issues have only grown with the passing years and she’s been very vocal in what she champions and how she wishes to change the world for the better. In this rap you would almost think that she’s a very angry person but in real life obviously the opposite is true. Many times when you see her the actress is smiling and seemingly having a good time. Her role as one of America’s sweethearts, yes she did earn the title a while back, has painted her as such a positive and happy person that seeing her in this rap is almost like a slap to the senses and a breath of fresh air at the same time.
When she gets to the moment about the Star Wars prequels though things tend to get a little more real, especially in that split second with Jar Jar Binks. You know, maybe that’s why people hated him so much, a simple case of envy that they couldn’t get over. I’m sure there’s something other than that to it but just imagine if that happened to be the case. Anyway, Portman is just vicious in her rap and it’s so much fun to watch that I couldn’t help but laugh the entire time. If anyone has an issue with this rap then they have little to no sense of humor since if you’ve listened to the woman talk she’s nothing like this in real life. The fact that she decided to do this puts Portman in a different light and it’s one that’s very flattering despite some of the content of the clip.
SNL has long been known for pushing the envelope and it’s something to be thankful for. It might seem uncomfortable and even controversial at times what’s allowed on the show but if everything was kept to a carefully approved and PC setting the show would have tanked long ago and we’d all be wondering what to do with our evening. Skits like this are what make SNL so great since they go out on a limb and start bouncing up and down daring gravity to take hold. If it does it means they start over and do something else, but if it doesn’t then it means the fans responded and are holding it up with their approval.
