It’s difficult to know sometimes if Harry Connick Jr. is really a singer or an actor, or if he’s just as comfortable doing both since he’s pretty good in either venue. But the thing is that he’s got a good voice, though it seems to be just on the edge of times of being not quite good enough to be considered superstar quality. Then he hits a certain note or sings a certain song and your opinion can change immediately. It’s the same way with his acting, some roles he’s great and can nail it without any issue. Other roles however he seems uncomfortable in and couldn’t save it if he had the entire movie to do so. It seems that if he keeps a healthy balance of between the two he does just fine, and that’s probably why he can do both but not just one or the other with great results.
Here are a few of his contributions to the big and little screens.
5. When Harry Met Sally-It Had To Be You
It’s an older song and predates Harry, but it’s still a classic that he brought back to life for this movie and did wonderful with. The movie itself seems to make you think that Harry and Sally aren’t all that right for one another at certain points but near the middle to the end you get the feeling that even with all their hangups, and there are many, that they couldn’t be more perfect for each other.
4. The Mask-(I Could Only) Whisper Your Name
It’s so easy to forget just who was on the soundtrack of The Mask since the movie itself was kind of swept away by Jim Carrey and his hilarious antics. Of course it’s nothing to be downplayed since even during this film he was at the height of his comedic prowess and hadn’t yet started the downward slide that would force him into media obscurity for a little while.
3. Sleepless in Seattle-A Wink and a Smile
It’s interesting how Meg Ryan seems drawn to these types of films. It was definitely her niche for a while no matter if it had to do with comedy and romance or drama and romance. Romance was always sure to be a part of it since that was the type of movie she seemed to prefer. It’s not a bad thing really, but it kind of made her a very typecast character that didn’t seem to develop all that much.
2. Cheers-I’ll Dream of You Again
I don’t know about the rest of you but I kind of miss this show. I know that the actors are a little too old to come back for a reunion at this point but it would definitely be something special just to see a one-episode get-together. Just to hear Carla insult Norm and Cliff again and to hear from Woody and Sam would be awesome. It would also definitely be great to honor Coach’s memory.
1. Harry Connick Jr.-Winter Wonderland
Like father like daughter maybe? I won’t say that he’s grooming her to follow in his footsteps but it’s always cool to see a child following after their parents at least for one performance. If she’s got the voice and the ambition he’s definitely got the connections.
Keep on singing Harry, your voice is very much appreciated.
