Season 2 of Mr. Robot ended with Elliot on the ground, gunshot wound to the stomach and all, his life slowly fading away. It was a nice cliffhanger for an otherwise slow sophomore season. We anticipated Elliott to somehow recover in season 3, and the teaser trailers for the new season showed us just as much. With the premiere of Mr. Robot on October 11, we finally see what happens to Elliott and much, much more.
Here are the top 5 moments from the season 3 premiere of Mr. Robot.
1. Meet Irving
One of the best parts of this premiere is the introduction of a new character as played by Bobby Cannavale. We see him in the opening parts, mustached and four-eyed, enjoying a visit at Red WheelBarrow BBQ. It’s a simple scene that has some sort of significance, if not just the introduction of his character. He’s offered a free milkshake he can’t have just yet, and his line at the end of the scene is a premonition of his character: “When we lose our principles, we invite chaos.” And chaos surely ensues.
2. Whiterose
The Whiterose revelation is what this show is really all about. We find out that Elliot’s father Edward worked for Whiterose without his knowledge. Now, we also find out that Elliot is following in his father’s footsteps. Elliot’s focus on E-Corp has paved the way for the Dark Army to pursue their plans. Whiterose also reveals that Elliot is as dispensable as his father once was. Edward apparently died for the Dark Army’s cause; Whiterose says that Elliot will probably head in the same direction.
3. Property of
The comedic nuances are slight in this series, but they are around, tongue-in-cheek. We see Elliot donning a sweatshirt with a print that says “Property of Josh Groban” on the front. It’s funny, and we like this scene for that. But more importantly, this is the part when Elliot thinks Mr. Robot probably didn’t survive the gunshot. That’s a big deal for the show, but we know it can’t be true because the show is called Mr. Robot after all.
4. Irving Saves the Day
At this point, Bobby Cannavale’s character is still unnamed. We only know him as Irving from the credits, but it seems he’s going to have a big role in this season. In this scene, he arrives in time as the driver of a yellow cab to pick up Elliot and Darlene before they find themselves into further trouble. We learn that he has enough connections to be useful, as he uses one of these to stop Elliot and Darlene’s pursuer. Then we’re taken to Red Wheelbarrow BBQ again before Cannavale exits scene one more time.
5. Welcome Back, Mr. Robot
We finally see Mr. Robot close towards the end of the episode. Angela is in discussion with him, and we learn that she’s also working with Whiterose somehow. Mr. Robot doesn’t like this, but Angela says that E-Corp is responsible for her mother’s death and that Whiterose has opened her eyes in many ways. Next thing we know, the lights are back on, and the week long blackout is over. What it all means is something that will probably unfold in the episodes to come.
